Paper or plastic?

I use cloth bags when I remember to put them in the car, AND to get them out of the car as I go into the store! Otherwise, I get plastic, because I use it for cat litter. Gotta get in the habit of putting bags back in the car as soon as I unload groceries. Not sure what to do about going into the store, since I keep them in the back (and there is already too much stuff kept in the front passenger seat of my car!).

If I remember the cloth bag I'll use them. If I forget the cloth bags then I sometimes "punish" myself by buying another cloth bag (with the thought that if I have to buy a bag every time I shop I'll start remembering to bring them!) So far it's worked pretty well... that and I have so many of them now a few are bound to be in the car... Laughing

But if I do wind up with paper they either get used to wrap books for www.paperbackswap.com or get recycled.

If we wind up with plastic those get used as small garbage bag liners for the bathroom and the diaper pail.

As for the sheer veggie bags - yeah. I feel guilty everytime I use them... I keep thinking I should order some reusable mesh produce bags.

It's been a while since I've been on here but I'll jump into the bag discussion. Since I've moved to OR, I've been much better about remembering my cloth bags. I hang them on the closet door by the front door and take them when I go for my three-store grocery run. I use the platic produce bags when I have to but I also re-use them. I'd like to get some of those mesh reusuable produce bags as well. Oh and when I don't have a bag, I get paper. I store my potatoes in paper bags.

We use cloth bags as well as a small metal/cloth (burlap?) shopping basket and large plastic foldable boxes in the b ack of the trunk to keep things in order between large shopping trips and our apartment.

Works out really well!

We use both re-useable bags and paper bags, depending upon where we shop.

Usually I buy produce/groceries at Aldi (Aldi provides bags, but charge 20 cents per bag) or the farmer's market when my own garden isn't producing, or at wholesale clubs; we use cloth bags at those places.

At regular grocery stores, if I can't carry it in my hands or have forgotten my bags, we use paper.

Our family has adopted a motto of 'conservatism,' which is why we try to use our cloth bags as much as possible. While we have always tried not to waste things, even the kids got excited about it when we did a unit study on the depression in homeschool. For that matter, we use cloth napkins instead of paper, we don't buy paper plates, and the kids color on scrap paper/back sides of used pieces, etc. We compost leftover vegetable matter to fertilize our garden with. I snip buttons off of ruined shirts and hem my son's pants with ripped out knees up into shorts. I could go on... and on... Our friends think we are weird. =)
