I am going to see the GI in 2 weeks, but in the mean time have been given the result of some blood tests saying I have a low white blood cell count.

Could this be linked to celiac and has anyone ever come across this before?

I have battled low white cell counts for a 1 1/2 years, I don't know if it has to do with gluten or not however. I was also anemic and always thought it had something to do with that, because of the malabsorption. I have not had my blood tests redone since going gluten free, so I don't know if they have gone up or not.

Low white cell counts are common with people who have autoimmune diseases so don't place too much worry on it. If you have an SPEP blood test done, which measures certain proteins in the blood, it most likely will be elevated. From my personal dealings with hematologists, they explained the whole thing to me and I found it rather fascinating. They are all clues that point to autoimmune disease....clues that most doctors do not think to check out.

As long as you are not getting sick, such as colds and flu, etc., do not worry....I have had life long low white cell counts yet am never sick in the traditional sense. It's a by product of autoimmune problems. One thing I have learned is that if you have Celiac Disease, your blood chemistry will not be normal. You may or may not be able to improve things but if not, it doesn't necessarily mean you have anything more serious.
