I am desperately trying to get to the bottom of this!
So here are my symptoms:
1) I can NOT loos weight for anything. I in fact, gained 15lb in the last 2 or 3 months. I work out, weight train and cardio, and eat really healthy. People around me even make comments about how healthy I eat and how much I work out and are suprised that I'm not thinner. I am 27 yrs old, 5'5". I have fluctuated between 152-157 for the past 10 yrs or so. Now I am about 160-162.
2) I break out in hives on different parts of my body.
3) My energy level is really low. I'm always tired.
I just want to feel good, have lots of energy, and be THINNER!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hi, Michelle. Well, your symptoms could be celiac. They could also be a lot of other things too, though. If you would like to explore this further, you can ask your doctor for the celiac blood panel. You may be rebuffed a little by your doctor because many of them are still under the impression that you have to be losing weight to be celiac. Recent studies have shown this not to be the case.
If you do decide to go ahead with this type of testing, you must be consuming gluten. Removing it from your diet pre-testing can create a false negative result.
If you decide to go outside the mainstream medical profession, you also have the option of Enterolab. That is a stool test, and you don't have to be consuming gluten to do it. Enterolab's results are not diagnostic. It cannot give you a celiac diagnosis, only say that you are producing antibodies to gluten. Enterolab's results are not widely accepted by much of mainstream medicine, because Dr. Fine has never published his results in a peer reviewed forum. Not knocking the man or his methods, only stating that he cannot diagnose celiac. It just depends on what is important to you.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I hope you will check back with us and let us know how you are doing. _________________ -Colleen

Colleen-- Thanks for your input.
So I was thinking if it could be celiac, but I don't get those horrible stomach problems like celiacs get, and I don't get that ill. it's just hives, that weight problem, and lack of energy. So you still think that could be a possibility?

I agree with Colleen. It could be all sorts of things. The hives could be an allergic reaction to something. The fatigue could be any number of things. And the weight issue could simply be that you're at your body's natural weight. Have you gotten checked out by a doctor? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I wish I had a cut and dried answer for you. Celiac is a disease that effects each of us in a different way - see link. My symptoms are the classic type, but other people have symptoms that range from skin rashes to impotence to neurolgical effects. Some people never have any symptoms at all. My recommendation is to look at the symptoms list I posted above. If you see yourself in any of those and have been unable to find another cause, Celiac may be an issue for you. If it were me, I would ask the doctor to run the full celiac panel (see link above) to try to get to the bottom of things. I would not restrict the testing to celiac, though. There are lots of other conditions that cause the symptoms you are describing. Thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, the list goes on. The only way to really know is to get tested.
I hope you find the answer you are looking for. I am glad you joined the group. Hopefully we can help you on your quest. _________________ -Colleen
