What does the future hold?

Do you think that it will ever be that some clever research team will come up with an enzyme or other compound that when eaten will make gluten completely invisible to the body? A sort of gluten antidote?

Imagine if such a thing existed with 100% effectiveness. I'd be straight down to the bakers!!

Is anyone actually working on this do you think? I mean, think of the market!!

Also, am I the only one here who doesn't live in the U.S.? Is this why when I post in the morning there are no responses until the afternoon because you are all still tucked up in your comfy beds Cool

If this is true then what is it like trying to buy GF stuff in America? Here I buy all my stuff from Asda and they have quite a large section with GF bread, rolls, muffins, pitta bread, baguettes, pasta, pies, pizzas, lasagna etc. etc.

Darwinian - there are actually 2 meds in clinical trials right now. Here is a link to more info. Don't get out your baguette just yet, though. Neither one of them are promising to allow us to eat gluten with impunity. THey are probably going to be a protection against accidental cross contamination.

I think, however, that these 2 meds are only the beginning. Once the pharmaceutical companies catch on that there is money to be made, they will not be far behind in developing something. I do believe that in my lifetime (I'm 37 - I'm not old) there will be a drug for celiac. Whether or not I will take it, I don't know yet.

We do have a few members from your side of the Big Blue Marble. They are not our most freqent posters, but do pop in from time to time. I'm glad you are here. It is always great to hear about how things are in other countries.

I haven't looked this up yet, but I am wondering why taking protease enzymes aren't the answer. If protein isn't broken down, then why wouldn't protein enzymes solve the problem--like beano, take it the first bite and the rest of the meal is safe?

Hey Os--I LOVE your optimism. Now if you really want them to give full attention to this problem, convince them that CD leads to ED. They'll be tripping over themselves to find a "cure". Priorities ARE important! Rolling Eyes
