I just read a recipe from a gluten free source (Gluten Freeda) and I have a question. She mentioned gf brown sugar as an ingredient. It would never occur to me that brown sugar wasn't gluten free. It is simply sugar that isn't completely refined as I understand it. It would just have some molasses still in it or added back into it. What would make it not gluten free?

I have a similar question about vanilla and imitation vanilla. Almost all of the recipes call for gf vanilla. I thought that the distillation process made virtually all alcohol gluten free unless something else is added to it. I haven't found any vanillas that weren't gluten free. Perhaps I haven't been looking in the right places?

Some brown sugars have extra coloring added, or malt syrup. It will be labled since brown sugar is either beet or cane sugar.

Inmitation vanilla has coloring and carmel color can be made from malt syrup.

Does that mean real vanilla is ok? I guess we have to do everything else the expensive way, so why not vanilla too, right?

When you real vanilla do you mean vanilla bean? Yes they GF.

McCormick's Vanilla is GF - as are a host of others. The great thing about McCormick as a company is they will disclose any form of gluten on the label. Cool

Second what Al said. We use McCormick for most of our spices, including vanilla extract.
