Confirmed. Story is a bit old though.
I haven't seen this problem here. Everybody I know pays with a credit or debit card. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

They're not stopping you from spending it because you HAVE to buy it again. They're just making you come to their station more frequently thus increasing the likelihood that you'll make an impulse purchase in their store. Those Cokes and candy bars are where gas stations make much of their profit.

I just heard a story on the radio about it two weeks ago. Perhaps it was reported long ago, and that station only recently reported on it.
I haven't seen it happen in my immediate area either. We have had a few gas stations close for good, though. |

| We have not had a vehicle since October, so we have been using public transpo. The bus was $4 until June 1st, now the fee is $6 a ride. No more trips to the library, as I can't see spending $12 to check out a few books. But every week my husband goes to do the shopping and he has to pay $12 to get to the local market. It would not cost that much if we were driving ourselves. BUT, my husband says it is well worth it when he has to take the bus to the county seat every two weeks. He says it is cheaper than having to pay for the gas. So I guess it all balances out. |

Not having a car also saves you money in car payments and insurance. I've often thought about adding up what my car costs me each month with payments, insurance, gas, parking for work, and an average of maintenance costs, but I think it would make me far too angry (especially considering I measure how much I want something by the number of hours I have to work to pay for it--imagine working a week every month just to have a car.). If I didn't live so far from work (15 miles out in the middle of nowhere), I would take the bus or walk, but I don't know that I could ever actually get rid of it.
Try to keep in mind that a $12 bus ride is probably much less expensive than paying everything associated with having a car. You may even decide that an occasional library trip is worth it. |

We still have the insurance payment. Our insurance agent said he could not completely drop the policy if we still owned any vehicle and it would be road worthy again. Getting it fixed is the hurdle, but hopefully it will happen before I go into labor... |

Does the car still run? Why not just drop the insurance to the bare minimum? I understand that you're trying to save some $$. But you may need the car in an emergency, which means you'll need it insured. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

| We are paying the bare minimum. I'm not thrilled that we have to keep it insured, but the laws here are wierd. The Explorer runs but needs a new tranny. |

Fun new development. I found this sign on our office door near the motorcycle parking*:
| Quote: | | Attention motorcyclists! We're running out of room to park your bikes! Just ignore the lines and park as close as you feel comfortable. |
*Good motorcycle parking spots are paved with cement. Why? When parked all the bike's weight is on the kickstand. When the temperature hits 100+ asphalt gets soft. Soft parking spot + motorcycle = sinking kickstand = knocked-over bike. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Which is why we have one of those cute little kickstand frisbees, that you put down under the kickstand so that your bike stays upright. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88

Smashed soda cans work too. If the parking continues to be an issue I'll steal one of DH's Dew cans. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
