Colleen- I really have to ask... Where on earth are you going to carve that time from, with all you do now? I laugh when I read your posts, because it's like reading my bio when I was thirty-something. I honestly don't know how I did it all then. I raised 4 kids, worked, volunteered as an EMT, volunteered and taught for American Red Cross, sewed all our clothes, cooked everything from scratch, including all breads, gardened, canned, cleaned and even found time for crafts. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.....gotta go take a nap.

I know plenty of people that do way more than I do. For me, the key to doing lots of things is to accept that I'm not going to do any of them very well. And always do 2 or 3 things at a time. Very Happy I keep thinking that if I could only get up an hour earlier I could get more done. Now that the baby is sleeping through the night, I get 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night. I could live on less than that. My husband keeps telling me I should slow down, but I keep telling him he should speed up to try to keep up! Very Happy Most of the time I do OK, but sometimes I get really overwhelmed. And you are way better than me - I don't sew all my kids clothes and my house is usually a disaster. Not filth, mind you, but clutter.

Riding the bus totally rocks! OK, my commute takes about twice as long, but I get to knit and sleep and listen to my book on tape. I even had a stimulating conversation with the gang banger that sat next to me on the bus today. I am really enjoying it, and I can commute for a whole month for the price of 1/2 tank of gas (My employer pays 60% of a bus pass). I usually have to fill up 3x month. I am at 1/4 tank now, and that should last me at least another week.

Aaaaahhh - I love the bus.....

Awesome! Glad it's working out! I wish that public transport were an option here, but it just isn't.

Meanwhile...we are trying to find someone to sell us firewood for the winter. Nobody is taking orders right now because they can't meet the demand. We were prepared to order it a few weeks ago, but someone skimmed my husbands debit card, and wiped nearly $3,000 out of our checking account. So, we didn't dare to order firewood until we got that mess straightened out. Now that we can order it we can't find anyone to sell us some. GRRR! A word to the wise...don't let your debit card out of your sight. The bank thinks the skimming happened when we used the card at a restaurant. From now on we pay with cash only at restaurants.

Wow. What did you guys talk about?

FWIW gas is now around $3.85 here. I'm trying to decide if DH and I should fly or drive to our next vacation destination.

Gas prices. The weather. Small talk kind of stuff. Some people bungee jump for excitement, I ride the bus. Very Happy

Yeah, it's getting close to $4.50 around here... Sad

I have a debit card that I use only for groceries, restaurants, and those things. There rarely is more than $200 in there. That way, if something does happen to the card, it doesn't mess up my bill paying account. (The debit card on my bill paying account is used only for withdrawing and depositing at the bank.)

I love thist post. In fact might very well be my all time favorite post. Seems like the bus gets you some much deserved 'me time.' I hope it continues to be fun!

Have you seen the movie Freedom Writers? Your interaction with the gang banger reminded me of it. Your convesation with that person might be something that changes the direction of his life.

...or HER life. Said gang banger could've been a female. We're in the 21st century now, I suspect gangs are jiggy with equal opportunity Wink

When C-Dawg starts flashing her gang symbol and colors around here - we better get ready for a turf war.

How interesting!! Ya know - knowing what I know of you Colleen - I can totally see you doing that.

I've always "envied" those with a bit of commute time. They get a chance to uncompress from their day before they get home. That's kinda hard to do that when you live 4.5 minutes from work...at least it's hard for me. If I'm in a pi$$y mood from a rotten day at work, it carries over for a bit at home until I level out.

I stand corrected. Females definitely have gang affiliations.

Freedom Writers portray female gang members.

OK - I was thinking I was being a bit selfish for wanting the time to myself, but your post made me feel a little better. I doubt I changed the course of anything, but my gang banger buddy did look like he needed a mom - or a hug. I didn't give him one, but we talked for a bit. The day before I sat next to a woman who was tatting, and we had a nice conversation about the lost arts.

Complete strangers are always talking to me. Very Happy I think it's ironic because I am not really all that outgoing when it comes to talking to new people. I think it's because I look harmless, so people feel OK talking to me - kids especially. People on the bus are absolutely fascinated by knitting, too. Teenagers are always asking what I am making, how I learned, etc. It's not something I expected to encounter.

Don't feel selfish for want a bit of time for yourself. Everyone needs time like that.

I see a book coming..."Bus Talks" by Cruelshoes...

*I would create some interesting narrative about the upcoming book, but alas I'm tpp brain dead right now after foiling the Calla Lily piece for 4.5 hrs. Perhaps tomorrow... Wink*

I would totally talk to you on the bus Colleen.

That's OK. Colleen can then flash her celiac symbol right back. "Yo! Celiac be in da houuuuse! Ain't no gluten trippin in my crib dawg!"
