I'm going with option A. I probably would have been a little more skeeved out if it had come from someone different. This is a guy I have been friends with for 10 years or so, and is also good friends with my Dad (Dad worked for the same company as I do - in the same office - for 30 years. This guy has got a reputation for saying some pretty outrageous things, but he's not at all creepy, and I think he has his heart in the right place. Harassment is in the eye of the beholder, IMO. I'm much more likely to get hauled into HR for something I said than to rat someone out for what they said to me. (ask me about my Valentine's Day decorations that got me dragged down to HR sometime) If the comment had been made to another person, the story might have been different. They force us to take harassment training every two years here, so we are all well schooled in what we are not supposed to say.

Ooh, someone else in the same boat as myself!!!
Yep, I've been known as the in-house decorator at some of my jobs, but it too, got me into "trouble"...on Cinco de Mayo, I hung up a pinata, some chili peppers, and a sombrero, but I had to skulk around to do it so that no one would see me...I also got in trouble for hanging up shamrocks and green things EVERYWHERE on St. Patty's Day...yes, they were considered "rogue" items...
But, the icing on the cake came when I replaced those little cubicle name plates (ours had our photos in them) with characters from the Justice League and/or Marvel Comics...I thought it was funny...
In college, I decorated for V Day (my least favorite "holiday") with broken arrows, black hearts, and little Cupids with arrows in their behinds... _________________ ~Torrey

HR can take my plants and game comics when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers. Our HR are Nazis when it comes to decorations and anything you plug in. A couple of weeks ago the AC blew out and they were pissed when people brought in fans.

It's not nearly as good as Al's cat story. You know those conversation hearts they have at Valentine's Day that have the little sayings on them (B mine, Call Me, etc)? I had a few that you blow up like beach balls (they were not big - they were about the size of a softball). I hung them from fishing line in my cubcle. Somebody complained to HR because one of them said "kiss me." She felt uncomfortable and harassed because of it. I got called on the carpet in HR and told to remove all of them immediately. I haven't decorated for any holiday since that. _________________ -Colleen

Wow. Somebody felt "uncomfortable and harassed" because of a balloon? I think humanity just hit a new low.
1. Find out who the coworker is.
2. Purchase giant phallic balloon.
3. Put said balloon in coworker's office. Bonus points for writing "kiss me" on the balloon.
That'll give her something to cry about! _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I can't believe someone would take offense at that! I'd put up a balloon that said something to the effect of "get a LIFE!!!"
The story reminds me of the year I was prepared with a come-back for once. I buy those stupid heart candies every year because my husband loves them. He usually puts a couple of them together to make some kind of lewd suggestion. Well one year I was ready. He put something suggestive together, and I pulled two out of my pocket that said something to the effect of "in your dreams lover-boy". You should have seen the look on his face! I very seldom "one-up" him. Yay Steph!!! _________________ Steph |

Yeah, that hardly seems worth getting in a whirl about...but who know what trips peoples triggers.
Sometimes I think people take things a bit too seriously. I'll stop before I get myself in trouble _________________ Al

Thread jack......back on topic.....sort of
We just got back from traveling to Kentucky for a month and here's my new pet peeve on the gas crisis..
In KY, TN and GA the gas pumps have a set limit of $75.00 (they tell me its set by the supplier). So lets do the math $75.00 divided by 25 gallon tank = $3.00 per gallon. Except the cheapest diesel we could find was $4.49 and that was a fluke. (So of course we tried to fill the 100 gallon tank in the back of the truck at that great bargain price but after scanning the credit card twice it refused it the third time and we only had 33 gallons of fuel.) Of course we could go inside and deposit our card with the lovely cashier and purchase to our hearts content. In FL you can buy $99.00, which would be great if diesel was $3.96 but its $4.73. So every time we stopped to fill up we had to pump twice to fill the tank. You would think that corporations that make billions of dollars profit each year would have someone smart enough to figure out what to use as a preset that would allow an average customer to fill the bloody tank on the first try.

We just got back from Nashville and we had the same problem with our motorhome. I think we could go to $99.99 or something like that. Kind of ridiculous, as is the whole gas situation. Heard today that gas will probably settle around $2.63/gal, but not until 2010. Yippee!! _________________ Robin

Woah, really? I didn't realize there were restrictions. That seems sort of silly. They must want more money. I'm sure their swimming pools aren't full of money yet. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I know, it is ridiculous. I had a limit of $50.00 and I only have a car. Don't they want to make money???? why are they stopping us from spending it???? I don't get it? _________________ GF BD 1/4/2008

Those limits are inconvenient. I only have an itty bitty car and it takes $30 to fill it up, so I can imagine it doesn't take a much bigger tank to break $50.
I also heard a report about how some gas stations are no longer accepting credit cards. Their profit levels are low to begin with (around 10 cents a gallon) and with high fees from the credit cards they are losing money. I guess it makes sense -- if a $50 purchase is about 12 gallons of gas, that's $1.20 profit, and if the credit card company charges 3%, that's a fee of $1.50. But as prices get higher and more and more people need to charge gas, it's going to make it hard on everyone. |
