|
|
We are making a party for my daughter. It will be outdoors in the park and what most people do is just order pizza from the local place. Since that's not an option for us and we don't want to just order pizza for the other kids and have the birthday girl left out - I'm wondering what you all suggest.
The sweet stuff is easy - rice krispie treats (GF) brownies (GF) cupcakes (GF) fruit, etc.
But what about main food? Rebecca likes sushi but I doubt her classmates will eat it....

You are right, Rebecca should not have to feel left out at her own birthday party. For my kids, anything they can make for themselves is a sure winner. What about a taco bar? Have hard corn shells and all the fixings (cheese, tomatoes, salsa, etc). You could cook the meat ahead of time and keep it warm in a cooler (keeps things warm too). Taco salad is even good cold, if you want. Or provide an assortment of deli meats and cheeses for people to roll up in tortillas (rice for your daughter, corn or flour for everyone else. Just make sure she goes through the line first.) I'll think more, but I am short on time now. I hope others have good ideas too. _________________ -Colleen

Why not make your own pizza and bring it to the party? That way everybody's happy. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I can't speak for Rebecca and Amy, but I know my son would be unhappy with this scenario. Kid's birthdays are one time, IMO, that they should be able to eat everything at the party. There's something that doesn't feel right about this party is about me, but my food has to be separate. Just how we do it in our house, maybe it doesn't apply to everyone.
Amy - here are some other places that might give you a party theme idea, which might lead you to a food idea:

http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com/html/party_ideas.html

Of course, there's always the option of having a mid-afternoon party so you don't have to serve lunch. That's what we always did when I was a kid. My Mom always spent her time on the activities and not the food. Just another possibility to consider. _________________ -Colleen

I think I want to grow up in your house!
Being that we don't have kids, I don't always "think like a parent", but I'd have to agree with Colleen. "Yeah, this is my party and I should be able to have anything I want at my party! Mom, get me a Red Bridge!" _________________ Al

And, if you did want to keep some sort of sushi-like item for whatever theme your daughter has decided for her party, weren't there some really cute "sushi" rolls that Colleen posted about...with Fruit Roll-Ups? That way, everyone could eat "sushi" and it would be a cool deviation from the norm.
Just a thought...I don't have kids (yet), either, but I *did* teach second grade a few years back... _________________ ~Torrey

Yes - that's exactly what I was thinking (you can live in my house too...). It was suggested that we just bring a version for Rebecca - which is of course what we do for other parties. But this is HER party and it should celebrate her! We are stuck with the 5 - 7 time frame for various reasons. But it will be OK. Keep those suggestions coming and I'm sure we will work it out. _________________ Amy - Mom to two kids, one with Celiac, and assorted pets... |

You read my mind, Torrey! The same thought just occurred to me in the shower, and was coming back to post a link to the recipe.
Rice Krispie Sushi

Nah - it's no fun here. There's no Red Bridge, and I would make you go to bed at 9:30 like my other kids. Except for the baby who stays up til midnight. _________________ -Colleen

OMG - I just thought of the BEST idea!!! What about BENTO BOXES??? You know - those little divided containers that they sell in the asian markets for lunches? Some of them are really cute with little asian pop-art characters on them, and can be had for only a few dollars. You can do so many really cute things in them. You could pack up the bento boxes with kid-friendly food (cut up fruit, meat and cheese cubes, GF pretzels, etc). And then serve Rice Krispie sushi for dessert. The kids get to take their bento boxes home from the party as a party favor. I think that would be easy to do ahead of time, and would be really fun for the kids.
OK - I have had my one good idea for today. I can go back to bed now. _________________ -Colleen

I think my statement got a little mixed up. I meant: instead of ordering pizza, why not make a bunch of GF pizzas for the party? That way the NGF kids get pizza and Rebecca can eat safely. Sorry if I was confusing.
However, I like Colleen's idea much better, especially if you have some time to prepare all the boxes. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Sorry I misunderstood your meaning, Ostrich. I blame my confusion on alien abduction or sunspots. _________________ -Colleen

I blame mine on space/time anomalies. S'all good.
I suppose you could have the best of both worlds: make up a bunch of bento boxes and fill them with pizza "sushi" rolls. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

While the Red Bridge is not a deal breaker. I would have to lobby [heavily] for a later bed time.
So, Os says we're having GF pizza? Sweeeet. _________________ Al

Gee - I like all the ideas... I could even put tacos into the bento boxes.... the good thing about the taco is that kids could do it themselves.... but then again a bunch of 9 year-olds doing it themselves can make quite the mess!
I too misunderstood the pizza idea. But now I see what you mean. Though actually Rebecca is pretty sick of the GF pizza...... She kind of had it a LOT in the begining....
Well, I'll be sure to let you know what we do. It's so great to hear from everyone. _________________ Amy - Mom to two kids, one with Celiac, and assorted pets... |
