Hi all,
I've enjoyed reading all the posts on this board. They're very informative. Thanks to all for the great info you share.
Today is the day I go for my Endoscopy. I am praying that the Dr. is able to tell me SOMETHING. I know the chances go down after being gf for a while. I started being mainly gf the beginning of June. I did have a piece of bread the other day because I was feeling crappy again and figured "what the hey" it couldn't hurt. It seemed to make a difference in the beginning(eating gf) but it seems that the last week to week and a half have been just as bad as before. My biggest complaint is gas/bloating and upper abdominal pain after eating. I have also been hit by diaharea (sp?) on several occasions. I've had to leave events in the past or not continue with an evening of plans after dinner. Thankfully I have a wonderful husband who is very understanding. This doesn't happen all the time though, that's what makes it all so confusing to me as to what it could be. How did those of you who know about other food intolerances find out about them??? I'm about ready to just eat one thing at a time and see if I can figure things out.
On the good side since stopping grains we have been introduced to the wonderful world of frozen veggies. We have always eaten fresh but we used to buy canned veggies for dinners. We no longer eat canned ones and have discovered so much more flavor in the frozen ones. We were adding butter and garlic but I'm now suspecting dairy as a problem. I'm just beginning to think food in general is a problem.
Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble again. And please wish me luck at finding something out today. Also any info on finding other food intolerances would be much appreciated. The only diagnosis I have at this time is the cover all of IBS. I wa also told back in Jan. that my iron was low and I know that this can be a symptom of CD as well correct?
I'm really finished now. Thanks agian.

Good luck to you. Let us know how it goes. My test came back "Inconclusive" because I was GF for 1 weeks before but I know I have it and my daughter is going to be tested July 7. My allergiest wants to do food testing on my back and if gluten doesn't show on my skin then we will do food challenges. Funny thing when I think about it. The doctor had asked me if I had problems with my eyes and I told him no. I thought my eyes were just getting worse because of my age. He also asked if I had lost weight recently. Well, I have lost 40 pound over the last 2 years but to me recently is within the last 6 months so I told him 10 pounds. I am going to go back to him in six months and see what he says and do the blood test again to see if I have changed at all. My gliadin was 78. Take care.............Nikki from Sugar Land |

Thanks for the well wishes. Can they tell anything just by what they see during the test? Or do they have to wait for a biopsy?
Have to go and shower and run a couple of errands before the test. Need to keep busy so I don't realize how hungry I am. hehe Kids are cooking breakfast and I don't get tested until noon.
Thanks again,
Debi
hoping for some sort of answer today. |

Hi Debi,
Good luck today! I hope you find some answers. I was not so lucky to get much of an answer from my EGD. Doc said there was no villi damage - so I didn't have CD. I went on a GFD and my gas, bloating, reflux, pain...all disappeared!
So - hang in there. Just keep in the back of your head gluten or some other food intolerance. Even if you've gone thru all the test and they say nothing is wrong with you...you can always continue on with being GF (or other F's ).
You discussed an Elimination diet. I have not done it, but here is some info on some that have. http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7188&highlight=elimination+diet
YES YES YES Anemia can be a symptom of CD. Keep a close eye on that.
Take care...I wish you well today. Enjoy the sleep! _________________ Al

They will be able to tell the over all stomach/intestine health...but to check for villi damage the samples must be processed and checked under a microscope.
Are you having them go both ways...up and down?
Good luck!! _________________ Al

Al,
I've already had a colonoscopy if this is what you mean. Now wasn't that a fun exsperience(sp?) Everything was normal there.
Do I (should I) have to ask him to make sure he's going to check the villi? Or do they always take a sample during an endoscopy?
I think no matter what I find out I will stay with a gf diet. I've read so much in the past month about the disadvantages of eating wheat and some other grains/carbs that I don't think I'll change even if nothing is found. Thanks for the info on the elimination diet. I will check it out. I just want to get some answers one way or another. I know this isn't all in my head.
I appreciate everyone's help and info

Debi,
I would imagine that they automatically check the villi when they do an endoscopy. When I had mine we thought I had a bleeding ulcer, but instead the doctor found evidence of celiac. He told me right away that he was pretty certain that was what it was and then it was confirmed a week later when the biopsy results came back.
Good luck today and I will put you on my ever-growing prayer list!
Your friend in Pa.,

HI Debi,
Yup that's what I meant I had them do both at the same time when they had me out.
I would verify with them before the procedure that they will take samples...just to be clear. I did that while I was on the table I don't know if they automatically do the bioposy. They need to take a number of samples too...it think 6-8 or 10 is the proper number. I've forgotten it by now. _________________ Al

Hey everyone,
Well, just as I suspected, the doc said everything looked good. He did take biopsys of the upper small intestine and stomach I believe. My stomach was red so he wanted to check it for an infection, but didn't think there was any.
What the paper says is "Non-bleeding erythematous gastopathy". I looked this up and couldn't really find anything except info on acid reflux which I don't have.??? In the dictionary when I broke it down into parts all it means is "red belly disease". So, I'll wait for the biopsy info to return and in the meantime continue to be as confused as always. If anyone has any info on this description above I sure would appreciate it.
Debi
Still confuses as to what to do because nothing seems to help. |

Yup - it's just a fancy term for red stomach that isn't bleeding...the question is why is red? I know my scope said "non specific inflammation". The doc said just stay on your reflux meds. I didn't accept that answer. I went GF - reflux was gone. I wonder what my stomach looks like now? |

Hi Debi,
That was me above
Glad to hear you didn't have any complications during the procedure.
If the gastro does not find anything conclusive...you could always to the www.enterolab.com tests. I know many people that have gotten diagnosed or confirmed diagnosis' thru them.
Then there is always continuing on your GF diet and see what happens.
Good luck, let us know the final results of your scope!! _________________ Al

Debi,
I'm sorry they didn't find anything conclusive. That really stinks. I feel for you. Keep your chin up and know we are thinking about you.
Take care,

Well, the doc called and said the biopsys were negative. No Celiac and no bacteria. So that leaves me with wondering what to do now??? I still want to be careful with the grain because of all the things I've read. I'm just at a loss as to what to do to try and feel better after eating??? I think I'm going to start a food diary and then write down how I feel afterword. Maybe I can start to find some links there.?? Anyway thanks again for all your input. I will consider the lab place you told me about. What all intolerances can they detect? I could probably just read the web site and find out. Oh well, gotta go make some almond flour apple muffins. They are absolutely delicious. Family loves them.
Have a safe and fun 4th of July weekend!!
