| Quote: | In June the ACDA launched a survey to learn about the availability of gluten-free lunches for students with celiac disease....
What we learned came as no surprise.
Over 90% of families send their child to school with a GF lunch. School officials routinely tell parents their child either does not qualify for gluten-free lunches or the school simply will not provide them. Perhaps as a result of this attitude from the schools, the majority of families don’t approach their school about special diet accommodations for celiac disease thinking that they will be turned down as well.
The encouraging news: some children with celiac disease do have 504 plans and have been able to obtain GF lunches. What that proves is - when schools are pressed to review their responsibility under the law, they realize they are required to accommodate the gluten-free diet, and have done so.
The ACDA, whose members include the nation’s leading celiac centers, the largest gluten-free food manufacturers, and national support organizations, took up this fight months ago. Recently, we presented testimony at a congressional hearing held by the House Education and Labor Committee.
Our statement noted that even before the recent economic difficulties, schools were not willing to incur the cost of gluten-free foods making it almost impossible for children with celiac disease to obtain their medically required diet. It was the first time, anyone had pointed out there was a problem.

Having worked for a couple of years in the school lunch program I would send my child's lunch even if a gf lunch was available, there are just so many possible cc issues. We also had very few full time employees in the kitchen, most of our people came from a temp agency so the school board could save money and get around the testing requirements for employees.
That being said the biggest draw back I saw to convincing staff of the importance of serving a completely gf lunch was the behavior of parents with children with other food issues. I had a child on a 504 plan, I studied all the literature sent in by the parent and the Doctor. The mother was given the lunch menu for the month, she would select what we were to feed her son off the menu with options listed for days when the menu was not appropriate. She constantly would select things we had been told by her he was not allowed to have and she would say it was OK once in awhile, grrrrrrr.
I personally believe I was getting glutened almost daily as my work station was next to the Baker's. I didn't realize how bad I was feeling until I left there and went to work in an office. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

I don't have kids yet...but I can't imagine trusting that the meal served would really be safe! That would make me really nervous. _________________ Rachel |
