Right there with you, Jenn!
Excel makes me *cringe*
I'm much more of a Word chick...

I like numbers. Numbers are precise - words are not.
SO, I love Excel and detest Word! I actually kinda liked Word Perfect, but no one seems to use it. Somehow WP documents won't open in Word. Gee I wonder why?
Anyway, I don't think I would enjoy spending the day adding up figures as that is kind of tedious and monotonous, but I don't mind working with numbers at all in general.
I think I got that from my very logical, electrical engineer dad! _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

Numbers may not lie, but people can be very creative in their manipulation.

Sure they can, if you have the correct filter installed _________________ Al

Holy crap--Word Perfect? Now, *there's* a term I haven't heard in YEARS!!
Wow...yeah, I don't know...numbers and I just never seemed to mix, kind of like oil and water LOL

I am with the non-numbers crowd. I often transpose numbers, so an accountant I am not. Words, however, and I get along great! I get calls all the time from people I've worked with in the past asking for help with MS Word. (Not that I know as much about 2007 as I did about previous versions - WTF were they thinking with the ribbons??)

Whose filter? The WP user or the Word user?
FWIW, the download so 2007 Word documents can be read by those using previous versions does NOT work. If - IF - you can get it to install, it still does not open documents created on earlier versions of Word.
SO, if the Word user needs the filter, not only would I not rely on it to work, but few Word users would see the need and few would bother to have it.
If the WP user needs a filter, I still wouldn't rely on Word to make it work.

Since you said Word can't open WP files, I was guessing you'd be using Word to open WP files.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP052742911033.aspx
As it states in the web page, if you don't see the converters listed, you have to install them. From what I remember in the older Offices [< 2007], WP converters were not automagically installed, you had to do it manually.
I've installed the Office 2007 compatibility tool on a few machine, it's always worked - luckily!

The easiest thing to do is to set Office 2007 to save files in the older format. _________________ Al

Oh good, it's not just me! I've given up on finding anything in those damned ribbons. I'm glad I still remember all my keyboard shortcuts. Seriously, last week I spent 15 minutes swearing at Word because I couldn't find the Print button. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

oh yes... even when we upgraded Excel at work a few months ago the blasted ribbons about put us over the edge! You'd see us just staring at our screens trying to figure out the simplest things we USED to be able to do with one quick click of a key. I swear productivity took a nose-dive for about 2 months! _________________ Kim --

Actually I used to use WP but no one could access any files I sent them so I gave up. I do have Word, but prefer Works for un home use or Open Office to send out.
Our Missions Committee note-taker has Office 2007 and no one but me has been able to open the meeting minutes she sends out because no one can get the compatibility tool to work. The *ONLY* reason I can access the notes is I am the only one with a gmail address which lets me open attachments in html format. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

This is why it's best to change 2007 to save docs in Word 97 - 2003 format.
To change default file save options in Office Word 2007
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/01/04/change-office-2007-default-file-save-formats-and-extensions-using-group-policy-gpo/
| Quote: | Double-click Microsoft Office Word 2007, double-click Word Options, and click Save.
In the right pane, right-click Save files in this format, and select Properties.
In Save files in this format, select Enabled.
In the drop-down box, select a default file save format. You'll select "Word 97-2003 document (.doc)"
Click Apply to save the settings.

Thanks for that! I will pass the info on. I know someone else who could *greatly* benefit from it as well.
Gotta ask though. This seems at best to be a work around to solve a problem that shouldn't even exist. Why would MS create a "new and improved" version ("new and improved" is almost always only half right ) that can only be used by others with the same "new and improved" version?

I can't say I know the reasons for the switch to.docx from .doc...but I do know it's from the same company that produced Windows ME and Vista...
I don't have a problem with how to solve this issue - it's a minor tweak. Certainly one could just always do a Save As and select .doc [that I consider a work around ]. A real problem would've been if they didn't allow you to save in .doc at all!
Happy Wording!! _________________ Al

Anybody know how to disable those stupid ribbons? I'm half tempted to viciously uninstall MS's Office (like Norton) and throw on Open Office instead.
