I really do not want to face the responses to this question, but, hit me with your best shot!!!
How many of you intolerant to soy, also can't have peanuts? I absolutely do not want to give up my peanut butter, but I am wondering if it is giving me a problem. I was reading Nancy's post about intolerance's keeping you from losing weight, which does make sense.
I have been trying so hard to lose weight, and it doesnt budge. I do not eat a diet full of calories. I eat chicken breast, cod, talapia, green beans, peas, carrots, apples, pears, peaches, peanut butter, and cheese. I also can eat Glutino's Pretzels.
I exercise every morning, I work on my abs, and then I workout with my gazelle. I can't add anymore exercise, what I do exhausts me, and causes me too many aches and pains as it is. Having CFS, I am very lucky to be able to do the exercise I do.
So, might my peanut butter being working against me? Also, have any of y ou given up green beans too? I understand soy, peanuts, and green beans are related. _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

I developed issues with soy after going gluten-free, but I've always been allergic to peanuts. I have no idea what other effects they have on me because I'm too focused on my throat swelling shut.
I don't particularly like green beans, so I rarely eat them, therefore I have no help there.
Good luck. |

Grrrrrrrrr, I keep getting booted.
I never had problems with peanuts. I have been intolerant to soy for over 5 yrs, well, who knows maybe forever and I just didn't know it because of the gluten. I like green beans, always have, and I love peanut butter. They say you usually do love the foods you can't have--go figure huh? _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

MrP is allergic to peanuts (never was before this sickness came on him) he can tolerate soy. I am just careful not to over do things.
The only way you can know for sure is if you give them all up. Do a food journal and see if you lose weight and then add them back in one at a time.
Do you have trouble with other veggies or fruit? If so, then you might want to see about salacylates. (MrP can't have those. He is allergic now to sulfa the drug and the natural occurring ones.) You will have to look at the ingredients in your shampoo and skin products for soy if that is the culprit. _________________

Yes, I do have problems with other veggies and fruits. Bananas cause a big problem with me and I love them! As for strawberries, raspberries, and the like...the seeds upset the balance for me, and it's very hard to remove the seeds!
Yes, many veggies are a problem...squash, sweet potatoes, the crucerifous veggies as I mentioned, nightshades, lettuce, I am corn intolerant...for a time though, I could eat corn, just not in processed form.
The foods I am eating now, even though it's not a wide variety, they seem to keep me on an even keel.
Believe me, I am very careful with my shampoo, conditioner, soaps, lotions, and the like. Any soy, corn, oatmeal, and of course wheat will make me break out in hives. I love my Panteen, Softsoap, and the lotions I have found so far.

Peanut butter and cheese are both very "calorie dense". Are you watching portion sizes? Have you tried keeping track of daily calories in a food journal? To do it effectively portions have to be weighed or measured carefully. A food journal was a real eye-opener for me. I discovered that butter was my issue. I really was not aware how much butter I was using. I also realized that I have a tendency to taste while I'm cooking to assess seasonings, etc. All those little bites add up. Just a stab in the dark.
Have you tried varying your exercise? I'm sorry that I can't back this up with data, but I remember reading someone's theory that our bodies get very efficient when we do the same exercise routine repeatedly. They claimed that changing our routine can reap big benefits.

Not only that, but your body needs time to repair the damage done while working out. So if you, say, work on your arms 5 days in a row they won't get a chance to heal and grow back stronger. I second the suggestion about varying your workout. Work on cardio one day, strength training the next, etc.
Also, how much weight are you trying to lose? If it's just 10-15 pounds you're probably near your body's natural weight point. Your body "wants" to stay at X, so it's even harder to force it to go below X. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Honestly, I would love to lose 40-50#, which would nearly put me back to when I married over 35 yrs ago. Just a dream, I am sure. The doc told me 20# would be great, yet I want more. I was thinking about the cheese and peanut butter, and yeah, I have to cut way back on them.
I also know that I should be alternating my exercise, and I forgot that too...what am I thinking!!!
So, while I am thinking of it, what is the allowable amount of cheese a day...2 oz? _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

I think that occasionally 2 oz. of cheese would be OK, but I personally wouldn't do it daily. I don't eat a lot of cheese anymore for several reasons, but when I do I usually make it a small serving of a highly flavored cheese, such as asiago, feta, or x-sharp cheddar. You get a lot more "bang for the buck" using cheese that way. If I were to eat cheese daily I would limit it to about an ounce. _________________ Steph |

Thanks. It's so hard to give something up, especially after you have given so much up. I know you are right, the light came on in my head. I can survive without cheese, but I must have my peanut butter with my apple, it's also the fat that goes along with my VIt D, so it has it's usefullness!
Well, forge ahead Deb! _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

What a shame to give up cheese (especially hard cheeses) when it's so important for your bone health. Hope you're eating other calcium rich foods. _________________

Deb- Have you tried any of the reduced-fat cheeses? Some are really good. I think Alpine Lace is a reduced fat Swiss cheese, and Cabot makes a really good cheddar. I'm sure there are others as well. If you really like cheese you shouldn't have to give it up altogether. When I want cheddar, I get the sharpest one I can find, slice it paper thin, and eat it with something else, such as an apple. It's really satisfying without adding too many calories. _________________ Steph |

I do like Alpine Lace cheese, and Swiss is my favorite. I usually have cheese and peanut butter with my apple in the morning for breakfast. I did fine with just peanut butter and the apple though! _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

Has anyone tried Sun-butter? It's made from sunflower seeds instead of peanuts. You are supposed to be able to use it just like peanut butter. I haven't seen it yet... someone at work was just talking about seeing it on t.v. _________________ Kim --

My bosses wife told me about sunbutter. She buys it as Trader Joe's. My local grocer does carry it, it's $5.99 for an 18oz jar! Little steep if I don't like it. Stacey says it taste just like peanut butter.
Day 2 without peanut butter, and I am still alive!!!! _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |
