I was cruising for new GF info and I went to check one of my favorite blogs - Tricia Thompson, MS RD aka "The Gluten Free Dietitian" was reporting on Van's French GF Toast Sticks that included Barley Malt Extract.
She called them on it, and they will be removing BME from the Toast sticks and Home style pancakes!
Be sure to check out Tricia's blog post on Van's.
If you see these products - be careful to read the ingredient list to make sure you've gotten the ones w/o malt. _________________ Al

THIS is why I always tell my husband that GF on the label doesn't mean it's really GF - always read the ingredients. (Usually when we're shopping together, he's got the list and the cart and I have the stroller with the baby.) I'm glad I've been making pancakes at home lately.

I may be restating information, but I talked to the people from Van's at the Thrive expo this weekend, and they stated that they tested and retested the barley malt, and it was indeed gluten-free. They confirmed that they are changing the ingredients because they don't want to scare people from their product because of the barley malt ingredient, not because it wasn't safe. They said the ingredients should be changed very soon, but I don't remember specifics on if they had already changed it and they're just waiting for the old ones to filter out, or if they're about to change it over.
I wish they had samples of the pancakes and french toast sticks there, but they only had samples of the regular waffles. |
