Well, that time of year is just around the corner! Does anyone have any good High School graduation gift ideas? In the past I've given tool kits -- you never know when you might need a hammer and a flashlight! Any other ideas? _________________ Kim --

When I graduated from high school I got luggage. It was both useful and appreciated. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

| I think a lot of people these days could use some sort of money management book to learn about money management, or at least software or something to track spending so they can start good habits early. Being aware is half the battle. |

Is the person going off to college? What about a book that will relate to his/her major? Or something to take to the college dorm - easy to prepare food (microwave popcorn, heat and eat soup or chili), maybe a small appliance (if allowed), a laundry bag and laundry supplies (with quarters for the machine ), etc. _________________ -Colleen

That is like what I did for my younger brother when he graduated. I put a bunch of stuff like Colleen mentioned in a milk crate with the book "Oh the Places you'll go" (totally unoriginal- but he loved it). I put in some boxed mac'n'cheese, a laundry bag, a coffee mug, soup bowl and a couple of utensils etc. _________________ Rachel |

This gets a second vote...I'd planned to suggest this, too. Too many young people today do not know how to manage their funds (or how to do math).
I paid for a burger (sans the bun) today. Gave the girl $6.00...my bill was $5.53. I gave her the 3 cents after she'd rung it up, so I totally confused her. She had no clue how to make the proper change without the register telling her. Makes me wonder how she manages her paycheck. _________________

That is exactly one of the reasons I suggested it. This country is full of people who don't know how to manage their money, and often times it's not their fault. They were simply never taught anything about money. It would be fine without credit because you can only spend so much cash, but credit makes it much easier for things to get out of control. Knowing how to manage credit really helps. (Sorry for sort of going off topic) |

Good ideas.... I really like the medicine one, never thought of that.
Yes, the gifts are for someone going off to college. Seem I always give the same things year after year. Just needed some new ideas.
Os, the job would be awesome, but I'd want to keep that one for myself! _________________ Kim --

| There are lots of good ideas here! I'll add school shirts -- either one with the logo for the college or one with the logo from their high school. It's fun to have stuff with the college logo on it, but kids can get nostalgic for their high school once they have moved away. |

There are a number of books written specifically for college students starting out on their own for the first time. They approach the subject from a variety of world views, but I think at least good advice can be gleaned from any of them. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

When I graduated I received cash and a beautiful pen and pencil set that I still have and never used.
When my twin nephews graduated they were headed for college, so we bought laundry baskets and filled them to the brim with all kinds of things they might need for laundry, cleaning, etc. Even small, roll-up ironing pads that would be placed on a tabletop to use.
Practical and usable are things I think the graduate appreciates if they are headed to college. They have such limited space in a dorm, so something they can put into use works well. |
