Hey all,

Got another question for you. Matthew is reacting again, and the only things that he's had lately that he doesn't eat on a normal basis is Corn Flakes Cereal (I have been told these are GF, and I have looked myself at the box, and haven't found anything he can't have.
Also, over the weekend, we went to visit my Grandmas in Wisconsin. Well, one of them took us out to Culvers Restaurant he had a hot dog and fries.
Am I missing something? Are these things not GF?

Hi Kristie,

Sorry to hear that Matthew was reacting.

Kelloggs Corn Flakes are NOT GF. They contain malt. I have a few GF corn flake replacments. Nature's Path has Honeyed (sweet ones) corn flakes and plain corn flakes. EnviroKids (as company as Natures Path) has a sweetened corn flake too.

As for Culvers...I'm "fighting" with them over their GF status of things on their menu. They have Pepsi, Mt Dew and other Pepsi products as NOT GF!!!! This is not true. I found a few other things that didn't make sense to me. M&M's & Butterfingers were not GF - again...if they are normal M&M's & Butterfingers they ARE GF. She told me they are normal products (not specially made for Culvers using a different recipe). Almost EVERYTHING in their menu contains gluten. One of the odd things is the number of things they have listed containing gluten, but no wheat. I asked about the gluten/no wheat - but really didn't get an answer. The only way it can have gluten with no wheat is to have barley or malt. It's possible...just very odd. The other thing is that they don't break out the meat products...like hamburger pattie...or the hot dog. BUT they do have a Choice Calculator that will list ingredients that might help. (I can not view it because their site does not work with Safari, Firefox or Netscape on my Mac Sad Sad )

I talked to a gal at Culvers and she didn't really know a lot and was going to find out and call me back. Well, that was 3 wks ago. I will be calling again!! I'll post an update when I have a chance to call them.

Here's their GF menu: http://www.culvers.com/AdminToolFiles/Documents/Document166/301AllergenBrochFINAL.pdf

Al,

I knew you would come through for us! Thanks Very Happy

Sunday morning he did have Kelloggs Corn Flakes, (I feel horrible missing the malt Crying or Very sad )
As far as culvers, I looked at the list, I didn't see the fruit punch on it. Do you know if it's GF?
Every time we have a Gluten accident. I feel like I am failing my son! I could just cry! I hate seeing him suffer like this. Especially, when he's tried so hard and has come so far with potty training, for him not be able to make it to the bathroom in time is heartbreaking for him.
This is why we never eat out here at home.. something like this always happens.
Thanks for listening to me... again
Al, thank you for all of the time and effort you give each person here... We really appreciate you!

Kristie, I feel the same way - everytime my husband has an outbreak I feel as though I've failed him. You try as hard as you can and that's all you can do. Don't beat yourself up. Its a learning experience and believe me I'm still learning after 25 years with celiac disease.

Hi Kristie (and Judy),

This diet has a HUGE learning curve. It took me a good 3-6 months before I got to where I felt comfortable. Also know that I had been researching it for many months before...so...be patient and learn from your mistakes and move on. Find the hidden stuff is tricky! Twizzlers had me for a month or two! Shocked And that's not even hidden - it's the 2nd ingred on the list!!!! LOL

Like Judy said, don't beat yourself up. Hang in there! It does get easier.

I hope Matthew is back to his usual self today Smile

I think its a learning curve that never ends. I've been at it for 25 years and still stumble now and then. If you think its hard now, you should have been areound then! There was no internet to glean information from, no GF menus in resturants, no GF cookbooks, no GF products (that I could find), etc. I just prepared plain foods, which luckily my Irish husband was happy with. Meat and potatoes..... Now when I find an item that's actually marked GF, I do the happy dance. So does DHubby!

Hi Al

I have experience similar questions regarding Culver's GF menu listing--it just doesn't make sense. I spoke to the manager at our local Culvers and he said the hambergers are 100% beef. My son is GF and we have eaten at Culvers fairly often. He has a cheeseburger patty and ice cream and hasn't had any problems at all. He seems to do well at McDonald's, Wendy's and Culvers--no Burger King.

Has anyone been able to eat the chili at Wendy's? My daughter (highly sensitive) has "bazooka" vomiting after a bite or two. Read in CDF newletter than someone else had problems with their chili.
Also, she cannot eat the protein style burgers at In & Out - same reaction. In & Out said there is no way they can clean the grill (shared with buns and using a shared turner) without closing down the restaurant.
Husband thought the onions were his problem at In & Out, but after a reluctant process of elimination (lots of visits at lots of locations), he now realizes he can't eat the protein style burgers, either, even with only lettuce and tomatoes.
We BBQ our own hamburgers at home, and fix them "protein style" like In & Out does. Bought some "patty papers" and french fry packets at Smart & Final and we wrap them so they don't drip on us or our plates. A real treat! BBQed a few extra patties to re-heat in the microwave for lunch today or tomorrow.

I was eating sugar-free red vines for about a month before I realized they had wheat flour in them...

I did something REALLY stupid during my first few months of being GF last fall. I was on travel for work and we worked LATE - like 7pm. My coworker and I were too tired (5 am pick up then full day at the office = 14 hour day...) to go to a sit down meal. We went through the Wendy's drive through. I ordered Spicy chicken sandwich with no bun. About 3/4 of the way through - it dawned on me that the chicken was BATTERED and FRIED. DOH!!! I felt like such a moron.

Thankfully, I haven't had any other really bad moments like that in a while. I'd say it's more of a learning WALL than a learning curve. And everytime you think you've got it under control - BAM - something hits you that you hadn't considered before.

Hang in there, Kristi - you're doing the best you can for your little guy. Smile

Thank you everyone for your kind words of encouragement.

Matthew is doing much better. His temperament is getting back to normal (man, does he get MEAN when he's had gluten!) I can't blame him, I know he must feel miserable, but it makes it hard on everyone.
He hasn't had an accident in 2 days now Cool
But the great news is.. Mom took him shopping today for his food, and he got LOTS of GF yummies.. one of them being the GF cornflakes... A Big Thank you to AL for telling us about them Wink
Oh Al, that reminds me.. you wrote...

So, are the pepsi products at Culvers GF? Or not? Also.. I think I may have asked this already, but does anyone know if the fruit punch is GF or not? I know he's reacted to the cornflakes, but I'm not sure if I could be missing something else still.

Hi Kristie,

To my knowledge...all those Pepsi products (Pepsi, Dt Pepsi, Mt Dew, etc) ARE GF. At least they are everywhere else!!! LOL

I do not know about the fruit punch. Is that a Pepsi product too?

OK...here it is...straight from the horse's...uhhh...Kelloggs mouth...

Sorry Gang...Kelloggs Corn Flakes & Frosted Flakes are not GF.

Thank you for contacting us to request information about gluten-free
products.

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not offer any grain-based cereal,
cookie or cracker products that are suitable for consumers on a
gluten-free diet. However, Kellogg's® Eggo™ Syrup and Kellogg's™ Fruit
Snacks are gluten and wheat-free and may be acceptable for consumers on
restricted diets.

We appreciate your interest in our company and products.

Kristie...maybe you can update your source on the GF status of Kelloggs Corn Flakes.
