As much as Elizabeth Hasselbeck annoys me, I guess we can be happy that she is getting the word out about celiac. She will be on Larry King tonight talking about celiac (and I assume her new book.)

Thanks Colleen. I caught it a bit late, but I have it recording on the dvr. I'm interested to see what she has to say. (Can't say I've ever heard of her before to be honest.)

Was this the author of "The G Free Lifestyle", or something like that? She was on several morning talk shows Tuesday and Wednesday. She did a pretty good job talking about being GF. Most favorite part: emphasizing that we're not as restricted as we used to be (there's lots of GF pasta, breads, etc). Least favorite part: talking about how skinny she is now that she's GF.

Aparently the book contains many factual errors.

Quote:
An Open Letter from the Executive Director of the Celiac Disease Foundation
Wednesday May 6, 2009
Elaine Monarch, Founder and Executive Director of the Celiac Disease Foundation, tonight sent the following open letter to the celiac community:
Celiac Colleagues:

I am writing to call your attention to the current publicity surrounding the new book, The G-free Diet, A Gluten-Free Survival Guide, by Elisabeth Hassselbeck, co-host of The View. While it is important to call attention to celiac disease, the information must be accurate – the inaccuracies in this book are potentially dangerous and detrimental to celiacs and to those yet to be diagnosed if people self diagnose and start eating GF. Our mission is to assist in getting people accurately diagnosed and the message in this book could defeat this mission. It appears that this book is being marketed as a fitness diet – eat g-free and feel so much better. Celiac is incorrectly referred to as an allergy not an autoimmune disease.

The GF diet is the medically mediated prescription that controls the condition for a diagnosed celiac. Several items in the book are misleading and inaccurate and place further limitations on the GF diet. The gluten-free lifestyle is a lifelong commitment for the diagnosed celiac, not an option, not a fad diet – adhering to the GF lifestyle requires patience and persistence. This lifestyle can not be trivialized.

Elisabeth will be interviewed on Larry King Live this evening on CNN. PLEASE take the time to call in to the show or send an email to Larry King Live to help correct some of this misinformation.

Email Larry King Live at: http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form5.lkl.html. The phone number for call-ins to the show is 1-800-676-2100.

Thank you.

Elaine Monarch

I thought she had some great information to offer in her interview (although I need to watch it again when I'm not still waking up). However, I wish she would have focused more on the correct way of being tested and what you need to ask of your doctor because she just kept saying to get tested if you think it's a possibility. She complained that it took so long for her doctor to figure out what was truly wrong with her. In my opinion, a lot of doctors don't know what to look for with Celiac, and if they do, they may not know the correct course of action for proper diagnosis.
She is the author of the book Os was talking about, and apparently she is one of the co-hosts of The View. I don't know that I'll buy her book, but I sincerely hope it's not full of misinformation because I can see a lot of people buying it just because she's famous.

(Did anyone else watch it and notice that the picture was at a different point than the sound when the book discussion started? They were replaying the video from the first part of her interview and playing the sound from the right part of the interview.)

Hehehee Colleen, I was just coming to post this...

I have not read the book myself. I'll withhold the few comments I have on Ms Hassselbeck simply because I've not seen enough of her [like on The View]. I do think she's gets picked on however.

I did not realize you need an RX to go on the diet.

Elisabeth Hassselbeck was also on Fox & Friends this morning and her book was mentioned. She brought up the 1 in 133 statistic with the 97% undiagnosed. There was some sort of pastry treat on the table - didn't get a good look at it but it kinda looked like a short churro.

Gluten free was not the only topic of discussion but she did make the life style seem do-able. No mention was made of cross-contamination unfortunately.

Nevertheless as Fox & Friends has the highest viewership of all morning news programs, no doubt at least some people became aware for the first time and that's a good thing!

Very Happy

To her credit I think she did a good job emphasizing the GF diet as a lifestyle change, not just a way to lose weight. But that was in the interviews. I have no idea what her book says.

As much as I highly, highly disagree with many of Elisabeth's opinions and statements, I will be getting her book. My adorable, sweet grandma who had a massive stroke last year and is in a nursing home told my mom the other day that she saw Elisabeth on the View and she was talking about celiac, etc. She told my mom she wanted to buy me the book. I was shocked that she remembered I am gluten free! I went GF right around the time of her stroke and it's been a long recovery for her. She gets so confused so often, so I was amazed that she connected the dots and even understood celiac/gluten free. Sooo my mom's going to buy me the book and give it to her to give to me when I go home in a few weeks. I'll let ya all know how accurate it is!

I love Elisabeth! And, I'm always looking for the simplest book on living a G-Free life. So, I got the book and was very pleased with it. I could be wrong - I would love to have someone who's done more research give their opinion!!

I am still very new to the whole G-Free world, but I didn't feel like the book was as misleading as the article claimed. In my own opinion, the review was rather biased...I did not get the idea that the book was a "fitness book".
Elisabeth DOES say that she started feeling much better when she went G-Free, but she also talks about the struggles of getting diagnosed and the damage that your body endures. It's not just an information book, but also kinda a biography of her struggles and the lessons she's learned.

The review made is seem like the book was a supposed to be a doctors manual in diagnosing celiac...but, of course it's not. If you go into the book expecting a ton of medical information and jargon, then you will be disappointed. If you go in, as a first timer, not knowing a blessed thing...then the book is helpful in guiding you to discovering your wheat issues.

Renee, if you would like a really great book, check out Living Gluten-free For Dummies by Danna Korn.

Every gluten intolerant should have this book in their library.

Is it just me or does the term 'G-Free' grate on anyone else's nerves far worse than nails on a chalkboard?
