Thanks for taking the time to letting us know what you thought. The porn looked good enough to eat just wondered if you thought it was worth the calories.

Hehehe I'm not much for counting calories, so I'd be the last person ask. Smile

Ha-ha! I found three of the mixes at the store tonight in the regular bake goods isle. I don't think I can do the cake mix (I'd have to sub three eggs and things just go wrong when you have to sub that many) but I did pick up the cookie and the brownie mixes so I'll be sure to suffer though the trial of having to make and eat desserts so I can report back in to ya'll on how they turned out (since mine will also be dairy and egg free). Wink Laughing

Stay tuned for food porn!

Well, the phrase, "Too bad, so sad" comes to mind with these cookies. They were okay but not great. They tasted good and were easy to make but were also greasy and crumbly. I think they really need the egg it calls for (I had to make mine egg free). I think I'll just stick to my old standby recipe. Oh well. They sure looked perty though!! Very Happy If you can eat eggs I suggest you give them a go!

BTW they were $4.19 at the store.

We tried the chocolate chip cookies. Using my cookie scoop, I got 40 cookies out of the batch. I only go one (damn cookie scarfing kids!), and it was fine. Not the be-all, end-all cookie, but good. I don't know that I would buy these regularly.

Now I am waiting for the next occasion to try the yellow cake......

Thanks for all the cookie reviews, guys! I think I'm going to stick with the Nestle recipe. The thought of putting all that butter in 1 batch of cookies makes me ill.

I feel like the odd person out for thinking that a stick of butter for 2+ dozen large gluten-free cookies isn't much. It seems like all the GF cookie recipes I have tried are loaded with butter. I always joke that they make up for the lack of gluten with extra butter. I guess I need to spend some more time in the cookie recipe section of this site. Smile

I am really looking forward to trying the cake mixes. I want to make the marble cake (using one yellow and one chocolate cake) but I probably should try just one to start with.

jeant, the Nestle chocolate chip cookie recipe calls for 2 sticks of butter. But those 2 sticks make 60 cookies. I believe the Betty Crocker mix only makes a dozen or two.

I got about 26 large cookies out of my batch, and the amount of dough seemed pretty similar to when I used to cut the Nestle recipe in half. (Probably a bit less than half a Nestle batch, but similar.)

Although I really liked the mix, the general consensus here seems to be "good, but not as good as homemade." So the Nestle recipe could still be the better way to go regardless.

I used dairy-free margarine instead of butter for the cookies. I got 40 medium sized cookies. I thought they were great. Much better than most of the prepackaged ones (Pamela's excluded.) It didn't seem like too much butter to me. Most "scratch" recipes call for 1 lb.

I got about 2 between 2 and 3 dozen 2 1/2 in cookies when I made them. I didn't think that was too bad for a small box mix.

As far as the amount of butter....It is a little more than homade cookies, but not much. If you look at the ingredient list, the main ingredient is rice flour, which has little to no flavor. The butter is (as it is in most baked goodies) what gives it the flavor.

Boxed mixes will never take the place of a good homade product but, I think it is a good effort on GM part to give convenience at an affordable price.

Just my two cents... Smile

I just made the cookies tonight, got about 26 large cookies that seemed to spread out quite a bit and were thin and crumbly.Tasted good but would probably not buy them again. Just my opinion.

For those not wanting to use the stick of butter the Betty Crocker website has alternate directions for no butter, they substitute with veg oil or shortening.

I made the chocolate cake for my Dad's birthday party on Sunday. For the record, Dad is NOT gluten free, and thinks gluten free food is horrible (no, he didn't actually taste any of it until this weekend).

I made him shrimp and chicken scampi with tinkyada rice fetuccini, Mom brought a garden salad (sans croutons, thank you very much), and the Betty Crocker chocolate cake. He knew about the pasta because he saw the package and wanted to know what it was, but he had no idea about the cake until he'd consumed three big pieces of it and I told him.

He was shocked. Actually, I was shocked, too. We all were shocked. It was fabulous. It was rich. It was moist. It was real cake. Actual, real cake. It was deeee-lish. It didn't rise as much as I expected it to, so it was a slightly skinny looking cake, but it tasted soooooo goooooood!

Gus is dairy-free, too, so I used the spreadable buttery spread by Whole Foods (365 brand). It worked out just fine.
