So here's what's been going on so far - did a week gluten-free, then had wheat... a lot of wheat. Within a couple of hours I was racing to the bathroom, and another 24+ hours (and counting) of feeling awful. All of the pains in my hands and in my hips that were going away are back full-force. The nausea is just fading now... and I wasn't expecting the foggy brain to come back so violently! I'm just hoping the sores I had in my mouth aren't going to come back - they hurt!
Anyway I went to see the surgeon who will be doing the GI scope for me, and he agreed that it sounded like I could be having problems with wheat. I'm scheduled for August 31st - "our next available date" - and he's going to take a look at my esophagus and stomach for acid erosion and signs of h.pylori, and he's also going to do "several biopsies of the duodenum." He wants me to have my Dr give a requisition for the celiac panel (MORE bloodwork, arg), and says that I can stay low-gluten until a few days before that, just to help keep my sanity. So now I wait until the end of August for someone to shove a camera down my throat. Oh the things we do for a diagnosis. _________________ Claire

What did he say was considered low gluten? You definitely don't want to not take in enough and heal up enough to get a false negative. Lessening symptoms is one thing, but missing out on the diagnosis would be a whole different animal. _________________ -Colleen

No no, I'm a sucker for burgers and twinkies (and it shows)...
Basically I'm not putting a whole lot of effort into the GF thing right now - I can't bear to give up my soy sauce just yet. I'll probably use this time to try and use up the wheat products in my house. _________________ Claire

Just so you know, you can get gluten free soy sauce at Walmart.
The Great Value brand is gluten free.
