This is a list of ingredients in an ice cream that made me very ill and was wondering if anyone sees any questionable ingredients?
Ingredients: Cream, Skim Milk, Sugar, Caramel Swirl (Sweetened Condensed Milk [Sugar, Milk, Water], Sugar, Water, Corn Syrup, Coconut Oil, Pectin, Soy Lecithin, Salt, Baking Soda, Natural Flavor), Sweetened Condensed Milk (Sugar, Milk, Water), Egg Yolks, Corn Syrup, Baking Soda, Salt, Natural Flavor. _________________ STZ

What brand was it? Natural flavors would be the only ingredient in that list I would be concerned about. _________________ -Colleen

The "Natural flavors", "soy" or "Corn syrup" could be offending ingredients if you have additional allergies, or the "natural flavors" are from something that is not GF... _________________

That is a very high fat ice cream. Its what they recommend (by name!)on a diet sheet I've gotten for the three day prep for the fecal fat test, because its one way to get the needed 100 grams of fat a day down without sitting around eating butter. If your diet is normally very low fat, and you eat a carton of Dulce de Leche and become ill, then it may be a symptom of malabsorption. How much did it take to get symptoms? _________________ Pat |

Hagen Dasz is owend by Nestle. They have good labeling practices, and disclose their gluten sources. I would not be concerned (from a gluten standpoint) about the natural flavors in that product. _________________ -Colleen

+1 on the high fat possibly being the problem. Especially if you are new to gluten free and your body hasn't been able to fully heal yet. I'm better than I used to be, but still get an upset stomach from some high fat stuff. People wonder how I stay skinny, but it's easy when anything high fat passes through undigested. _________________ Lauren

One of my celiac friends got me hooked on Dulce de Leche ice cream as a decadent treat. I have never had a reaction to it, but I bought one of the single-serving ones as a treat (on a day everyone else was getting birthday cake) and that little 1/2-cup serving had something like 18 grams of fat in it.
So it is possible the fat had something to do with you getting ill, or maybe cross-contamination if other ice creams or desserts were being served. |

+another vote for fat content. You could also have issues with dairy that aren't as obvious until you eat a pint of ice cream all at once. _________________ Nance

Agreed. I had a lot of trouble digesting fats as I was healing after first being dx'd. Now? Not so much... dang! _________________ Cheers!
