So for my parents 50th Anniversary they took everyone on a 3 night cruise, that's 14 of us in all. Overall it was a good experience. We notified them at the time of booking that I was gluten free and again by fax when filling out the pre-boarding paperwork on line. I did not talk to anyone at the cruise ship ahead of time, there was no number I could find on the website, so I was a little hesitant, and packed a lot of snack bars and nuts.
The first meal was a total bust, the only restaurant open when we boarded was a buffet and everything was fried. (I ate the grape garnish on the cheese platter), probably if I had hunted someone down I could have found more to eat but I wasn't really hungry at that point anyway.
Dinner that night they immediately came to the table and identified who I was and they told me that they would be back at the end of dinner to take my order for the next day. I ordered steak at the first meal, it seemed safe and was very good. The next night I had tomato basil soup and a chicken dish with rice (In place of the barley on the menu) and raisins. The first order of soup came out with croutons, which I sent back and that got me really nervous but it came back out, thinner and without the croutons. That evening, they made my parents a cake for their Ann. it was gluten free, everyone said it was good, I was stuffed, so I don't know. The last night I ordered a black bean cake dish and told them if they couldn't make that I'd take a veal chop, when I got to the table they brought out both dishes.
I don't eat breakfast, but was told if I went to the restaurant with the sit down meals that they would make whatever I wished. Lunch the first day I ate fruit and a snack bar as we were docked at Nassau and weren't sure we would be around for lunch, I didn't want to order if we weren't going to be there. The second day was the beach BBQ and I ordered fruit and BBQ chicken, which was excellent. I ate tons of soft serve ice cream, as they checked and determined that it was gluten free. (Well not tons, but enough)
The offered to make anything I requested and I ordered off the menu and they adapted the recipes to fit. I never once got sick. All of the dishes were very good, the 2nd and 3rd night they brought out bread, unfortunately it was ener-g rolls, so that was not so good, but some of the regular rolls were pretty hard also, so I guess I was in good company, apparently bread items are not there specialty.
They told me that if I had any questions about what was gluten free to ask and they would check for me. I would have been more comfortable if they had given me a list of things that were ok, or available at the different food booths but apparently they don't do it that way.
Overall it was a good experience and I wouldn't hesitate to eat aboard a Disney cruise if I were to go again. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |
