Hi!
I wanted to pop up and say hi, as I was just told that I have celiac yesterday when the nurse called back on my blood work...I was at the doc's last week getting my annual pap and mamo, and just point blank asked the doc to test me.....my mom has it, and she is always telling me to get tested for my gas.....so I did.....now I go back to the doc next week.....Just because my mom has it doesn't mean I know all about it....  .....I know some stuff.....I am 54 years old.....have been soooo tired, aches and pains..... ........Thanks for listening.....I have a lot to read here and will......Have a great day!!

Hi Lucy,
Welcome to the board! Sorry to hear of your news, but, once you've been GF for a while you'll wonder why you didn't get tested sooner.
The tiredness, the aches, the pains - hopefully all will subside once you successfully remove gluten from your diet.
I have a friend that I suggested she get tested. She didn't didn't feel all that bad, but her niece was just dx'ed. She did confess to unexplained anemia. She had all sorts of blood work done. The blood work for her liver said she had Hep C [not uncommon in CD to have whacky liver panels]. After being GF, her liver, celiac panel, anemia tests returned normal results.
If you have any kids, they should be tested - just like you were tested. CD is genetic. Just like your Mom and/or Dad passed the genes on to you, you have passed it on to your kids. Please get them tested - symptoms or not. Often times celiac disease has no outward symptoms. The sooner this disease is caught, the better off a person is. Early detection is the key!
Make yourself at home, don't be afraid to ask questions. Good luck in your GF Journey.

Thanks for the nice welcome!!
One quick question before I go out the door for work.....your friend with the hep...did she for real have it then? My AST & ALT numbers are under 100.....which is good....they diagnosed me with the hep from all these symptoms that the celiac also have.....sheesh....lots of questions for my doc next week......thanks again..... |

I had serious liver issues before going GF too. They have finally resolved after several years. Had the liver biopsy-and they were never able to determine what the problem was. That biopsy went all over the US.

Hep C is caused by a virus. While liver tests may improve with the GF diet, it won't eliminate the virus. Just throwing that out there for reference.

Symptoms ranged from mild to severe, and interferon had to be discontinued in 2 of 7 (29%) patients. Symptoms disappeared in 6 of 7 patients after interferon withdrawal. Onset of symptoms compatible with celiac disease during interferon therapy was significantly associated with the presence of anti-transglutaminase antibodies (OR 53). Conclusions: In hepatitis C patients, the activation of silent celiac disease during interferon treatment is almost universal and should be suspected, but it uncommonly requires interferon treatment discontinuation. Symptoms subside after interferon withdrawal. |
