I was in the Good Harvest Grocery Store in Waukesha this morning. They carry a full line of GF foods.
While chatting with the owner, he mentioned that the Milwaukee support group never responds to his phone calls, etc. He would like to have a support group started in Waukesa County and meet at the store. I would really like to get a support group started, but I need your help. Al, I know you started your group. Has anyone else been in on the ground floor? I'm going to need big time help/input if we're going to pull this off.
Any and all assistance will be appreciated.
Thanks a heap. _________________ Judy |

I helped start our group, and have been runing it solo for about a year. We now have 100 people on our email list, and consistenly have about 20 at our meetings. I have to say it is more work than I ever imagined it would be, but it is so rewarding to see people on the GF diet sharing and networking every month. _________________ -Colleen

Judy that's great! I will agree with Colleen, it can be a lot of work. I feel bad that I can't put more time in to than I do.
I think TEC's words of wisdom to me when I was starting up was...have a partner - someone to share the work.

I totally agree - make sure you have someone to help you out. It's loads of (very satisfying) work... but hard to pull off all by yourself. _________________ Cheers!

Yes, I did say that and I would recommend the same to anyone considering it. I'm about burned out on our group, but the past couple of months our members have really 'finally' started to step up and take a more active role. |

Thanks for your words of wisdom.
It's funny, but I just met a woman at Curves who has two autistic children on the GF/CF diet. Maybe I can coerce her into helping. I really don't want to do it alone. _________________ Judy |

That'd be great!
I have heard from several friends that run groups that people will A) volunteer to do stuff, then not do it B) not volunteer at all.
I've got a built in helper _________________ Al

I have had exactly no luck at getting anyone to help me. So it's all me, all the time. Right now it is just a question of keeping up the momentum until burnout sets in. _________________ -Colleen

As they say in the south, bless your heart! I couldn't/wouldn't do it without my partner-in-crime, my celiac sister and I don't have kids or a husband.
Perhaps at your next meeting they'll be a brand new person who's got that deer in the headlights look about her who you can coerce into taking an active role all in the name of her good health. |

Wow! I'm really having second thoughts about starting a group. I think I'll have to find a cohort to help before I jump into this. I do tend to leap first when I get excited about something.
I'm not giving up on this, but I'll try to contain myself. _________________ Judy |

You should have third, fourth and fifth thoughts when you're done with the second. It's a rewarding thing to do but requires much more time and effort than one can imagine. |

Don't let us dampen your spirit. We're just giving you a heads up about you you might be in for

Hmmm, could this be why you've...raced snowmobiles, fly airplanes, ride motorcycles, participate in "bucking bronco contests", etc? I know being a support group leader will be one more thing to add to your long list of accomplishments! You rock! _________________ Al

For the past five years it's just been three of us (running a very large group). We *finally* have some help with two new people stepping up. Yay! Though I think we'll lose our branch manager at the end of the year to burn out. It happens. I really do wish more people were willing to step up and help out.
On the other hand, it was such a breath of fresh air yesterday when I met with our new Mentor Program Coordinator. We talked for nearly three hours! She's so excited about helping!
All this to say Flygal, keep your enthusiasm, manage your time, find someone to help and you'll run a great program for a long time. Just remember: it's a marathon not a sprint. _________________ Cheers!
