For those who have made this I have two questions:
1.) was it really good or was it good because it was quick and easy?
2.) if you had plenty of time to make, bake and frost a cake would you still make the mess cake? |

Both! It tastes like a really moist chocolate cake, and it's easy to throw together. Plus it appears you can sub out whatever cake mix you want, GF or otherwise.

It depends on what I'm looking for. If I don't need to worry about presentation (if it's just going to be slopped together with ice cream) I'd make this cake. If I'm trying to make something nice (say, for somebody's birthday) I'd make a traditional cake.
I'm wondering if you could turn this into Better Than Sex cake. It shouldn't be too difficult. For those going "HUH?!":
1. Make a cake. Sheet, circular, whatever. Just make sure it has a solid bottom. I suggest a 9x13" pan.
2. Poke holes all over the top of the cake. Make sure they go almost to the bottom of the cake. Not through the cake. A bamboo skewer works great.
3. Pour gooey toppings over the top. The toppings will ooze into all the holes. Hot fudge, caramel, whatever floats your boat.
BAM! Better Than Sex cake.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Just the opposite. I weighed out 18.5 oz. and made the cake with that. There was 10.5 oz left in the bag which measured out to 1.5 cups. So if you are going to do it without a scale, measure out 1.5 cups of mix and set it aside for a later use, and make your cake with what is left in the bag.
To answer TEC's question... It is really good, but you can't compare the two desserts. This is kind of warm, gooey comfort food. If I had enough time to make either a regular cake or this one, it would just depend on my mood. _________________ Steph |

Thanks very much, Steph! I really should just invest in a scale at some point.
I also had one update. I made this for dinner with the family a couple of nights ago. I noticed the 6qt crock came out much gooey-er than the 4qt. Still yummy, but more like chocolate lava cake. The 4qt was more cake like. We ended up serving it over vanilla ice cream. Everybody approved. YMMV _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I emailed our results to Steph, the Crock Pot Lady. She said it looks awesome, and she's going to give it a shot. Stay tuned! _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Has anyone bought her book yet? I've been wondering if it's just all the recipes on her blog, or if there's something new in it? I was tempted to buy it, but have been on a bit of a cookbook-buying-binge lately, so am trying to exercise some restraint.... _________________ Steph |

I looked at her cookbook the other day and was tempted....but decided against it. It looks pretty good. _________________ Rachel |

Um....no! Never in a creepy Misery way! *slowly puts away the sledgehammer*
I've been tempted to pick up her book too. Apparently it's her best recipes, approved by her family and people from all over the world. Plus they're all GF. Perhaps I'll pick it up with my birthday money. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
