What the heck is going on? I have been gluten free for about 2 weeks and I want to eat everything in sight...I am like a scavenger!
I feel jittery and shaky when I get up in the morning and the first thing I want to do it eat something and FAST....
I have never felt this way before, but then again I have been eating gluten for 55 years.
IS THIS DETOX? OR WHAT? |

The "wanting to eat everything in sight is VERY common and is normal. So I wouldn't worry about that at all. Your body hasn't been able to absorb nutrients for a while. Now that you are healing and it can, it is motivating you to get more food. I especially noticed that I craved nutrient rich foods -- avocados, protien related foods, green veggies, tomatoes, etc.
As for the gitteryness, you should speak to your doctor to be safe. We aren't doctors and can't diagnose... There are other causes that should be checked out (blood sugar especially). But I will say, that also does occur with some people when they go GF. You are correct -- it is like a detox. I've even read that gluten can have an opiod-like effect on your body. Also, if you are staying away from carbs in general, I think it can accentuate the problem (just ask anyone who's gone on either the Atkins or South Beach diet... ).
Hope that helps!

I've found that I'm not at all satisfied or full if I simply eat protein. So, I make a concerted effort to eat carbs with protein almost everytime I eat. As a result I feel full and am not gittery. |

Hi Home,
After I was GF for a bit, I was hungry all the time too. While I was sick and hurting, I didn't eat like should, so I suspected that it was my body's way of playing catch up. I had lost 40-50lbs when I was sick.
As for the jittery - it might be gluten withdrawal. Gluten and Dairy have addictive properties and when you remove them, there is a withdrawal period of a week or two. It's not uncommon for people to feel pretty good at first, then feel crappy again for a short time.
Have you been checked for other medical conditions? Are you blood sugars OK? _________________ Al

I am finding that carbs plus protien does help...I snacked on peanuts throughout the day and that was helpful....
But I do feel rather jittery and wired...my blood sugars are fine from recent bloodwork...
It feels like a form of detox...hopefully this will pass
In the meantime I will try to eat as healthy as possible and wait... |

I would make sure you keep snacking throughout the day. Not only is it healthier, it'll keep the jitters down. You may also want to try small amounts of sugar, like GF hard candy. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

PMA does more good than people realize. Keep up the good work. The first couple of months are the toughest - mentally, physically, emotionally.
Good luck at the show. Are you a vendor at the craft fair or a customer? _________________ Al

Thanks I am a vendor...I am a soapcrafter...
I also just found out that I was eating Activia, which I see from the blogs has gluten in it! Boy that sneaky little gluten hides in all kinds of sneaky little places! |
