According to Dr. Green, it shouldn't matter what is in your skin moisturizer...unless you plan on eating it. He said that if you DO have a skin reaction, it is due to something else entirely, *not* celiac.
Personally, I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin, so I have to be careful with my soaps, lotions, detergents, perfumes, etc. (I recently broke out ALL over my neck because of a perfume I had used...) Specifically, I don't know what I react to, and the allergist I most recently went to was a complete moron. Thankfully, I went to a derm who gave me an Rx for desonide lotion (which just so happens to be a generic competitor to a drug I work on...) So, I just try to be as careful as I can. (I seriously have very little faith in most doctors.)
That said, I have found a great line of lotions at Whole Foods that smell awesome and to which I have not reacted. It's called Desert Essence, and they have some great scents, including Vanilla Chai, Almond, Coconut, and a few others. _________________ ~Torrey

Dr. Green isn't gluten intolerant, nor celiac...he can't know for sure. I have even told him this before. I love the guy, but some of his thoughts are not condusive to we gluten free peeps.
Anything you put on your skin, can conceivably get into you mouth. Simply touching your face, and then eating something, without thinking, or even just touching your lip, can get the gluten to you. Some of us are super sensitive, and any gluten in our life becomes an issue.
In my opinion, it's just best to not use gluten containing products. Oats and corn make me itch, soy and gluten make me break out in hives. No matter what scientists say, I am sure there is a connection in some way. _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

Oh, I forgot to add in my previous post: the Desert Essences line is CLEARLY labeled Wheat and Gluten Free.

I'm with Deb on this - Aveeno does not agree with my skin, nothing with oats in it does.
I can use the Desert Essence conditioner on my hair without much irritation so I think Torrey is onto something too, at least for me.
I sometimes just use plain almond oil as a moisturizer to avoid extra ingredients. I know that I don't react to it by itself. There are other plain oils you can obtain to try out - jojoba, apricot kernel, and more. Once you start putting more and more stuff in lotion, the more likely that I'll react to it... _________________ son - high ttg - 4/09, pos. biopsy 5/09
