I found this on csaceliacs.org. Does anyone know anything more about this connection. It's the first time I've heard of this.
"Also common for newly diagnosed CD patients is sensitivity to food and air-borne molds. This is likely to include such common foods as mold-based cheeses, mushrooms, yeast and yeast products and xanthan, which may be used as a binder in some gluten-free breads."
I find this interesting b/c my daughter and I are allergic to mold.

i had not heard it before, but i have had trouble with mushrooms for years--i can eat cheese, but mushrooms have made me sick for several years now and i have wondered about yeast, cause when i make bread for myself, it does tend to bother me, i was thinking it was the heaviness of the flour, but maybe its the yeast. I have a celiac list and these items are all listed as suspect foods. _________________ Judy

At this point, it would not surprise me. I am allergic to mold also. When I get my allergy shots, the one with the mold hurts like hell and swells and I have a "poppeye" arm for a day or so. LOL _________________ Nikki from Texas |

I also cannot eat mushrooms. I had airborne mold in my kitchen & it was making me really, really, sick. I had most of the back half of the house torn out & most of my kitchen to get rid of it. I live in a little house on the wrong side of the tracks, but there is not any mold in here !!!!!!!
It was coming from under my kitchen sink & had spread all along the walls, ugh. The mold count was really bad, I would not walk back in the kitchen when I found out.
So be sure you get your house tested for air borne mold !!!! |

I laughed out loud at Nikster 57's post as they could have been describing me. I am also highly allergic to mold and my arm does the same thing on the mold "side" after my shots. Looks like I've been pumping iron!
The mold allergy became a problem for me about 10 years before I was diagnosed with Celiac's. But I would bet my paycheck that many Celaic's all have certain problems in common. Most of what I've read here on this forum sounded all too familiar. The only thing I know for certain is most MD's seem to be clueless on this subject and like to put their patients through alot of grief before they actually get help. I think anyone presenting themselves with GI symptoms ought to be tested FIRST for Celiac's...it's an easy test now and you absolutely DO NOT have to have an endo for a definitive diagnosis. The bigger problem is once diagnosed, getting people to change their lifestyles to adapt to the diet. I have not found this diet to be horrible at all but I ate close to it anyway as so many foods "bothered" me. Funny how people have so much trouble giving up certain foods, even when it makes them terribly ill! |
