We're flying back to see my DH's family in NC in December for the holidays. We've got a 3 hour lay over in the Chicago O'Hare Int Airport. Anyone know anywhere I might be able to safely eat there? I really don't want to live on bananas for the whole day.
Also his folks are out in Greensboro NC - any good restaurants I might have a wing and prayer eating in?
I can't do eggs and can only occasionally get away with dairy about once or twice a week, so please keep that in mind.
Thanks for the help!! _________________ Cheers!

Eat some barbecue. Any place with good 'cue will sell it by the lb, so you can take it home and have it on a gluten free bun. No suggestions on actual restaurants, but you should be able to call a couple places and confirm they use distilled vinegar in their sauce. I used to live in Chapel Hill so not close enough to know any of the local restaurants in G'boro.
The Whole foods GF bake house is here in Raleigh but sadly they do not sell directly to the public and even the GF bread in the local stores is frozen. I am NOT a morning person otherwise I'd consider getting a job there just for the fresh bread. _________________ Lauren

I used to live in Greensboro actually but unfortunately it was way before GF so I'm not sure how much I can help you. I currently live in Chicago and haven't yet found anything at O'Hare that I would actually trust now. I bring my own snacks. There is a Chili's- do they have a gf menu?
I found this http://www.ifly.com/chicago-ohare-international-airport/shops-stores
it lists all of the stuff in the airport. _________________ Rachel |

Perhaps it's time to become a morning person...?
(Gains 10lbs just thinking about it... )
I hear BBQ in NC seems to be inescapable - like sweet tea. I've been back once before in the winter w/ DH but that was what? five years ago... it's been a long time. We went to Tom Collin's* house for a BBQ. BEST ribs ever. ::drools::

Thanks! That looks very helpful though not promising. I think there were maybe three places on the entire list that *might* have something I could get to be maybe be GF. Salads - here I come. I'll have to contact the airline and see what I can do about bringing my own food. I know they're all up tight about liquids these days but maybe I can bring something solid they can heat up for me. Don't they still have microwaves on planes? Or I can eat a yucky sandwich. Eggless breads leave something to be desired but better then going hungry all day. _________________ Cheers!

I know- travel is rough. Like you said- pickings are very slim at O'Hare. I haven't eaten a thing there. I end of freezing some cheese sticks and bring crackers and dried fruit. I went overseas in June and was paranoid about starving to death so I had brought some frozen pasta with tomato sauce. I had no issue with security- although it was still frozen at the time. My plan was to ask them to zap it for me on the plane- but I didn't need to- their GF meal was ok (mostly). _________________ Rachel |

The calories from all that fresh bread would be the other problem.
BBQ is definitely a big part of the food culture. Seafood as well but sadly most is breaded and fried. Since the BBQ sauce is vinegar based it's fairly easy to find one that's gluten free. I love the bbq restaurant experience when the meat is good, but it's just so much easier and better to be able to take it home and have my own bun, and I wonder about CC and ingredients in the sides. In Raleigh I go to the state farmer's market and get meat from the Nahunta pork outlet Wed-Sat (when they are open) because they just do pork so less CC risk and it's cheap and close to where I live. I'll be getting some this week to have with the boyfriend while he is here, and he'll probably load up the car with bbq sauces of different brands to take back to his co-workers in IL because they are curious about the vinegar sauce. _________________ Lauren

Might work, depending on when it is. I'm not super sensitive so I can't guarantee a place is GF just because I have ate their without issues so another call is in order first. _________________ Lauren

I've had good luck at Wolfgang Puck's. Their salads are very good. There are places that sell just fruit.
I am a faithful brown bagger for plane trips. |
