I take two medications and want to check to make sure they're gluten free.
Diovan (blood pressure) and Levothyroxine ( thyroid)
I'd appreciate any ideas where to get the info online.
I've tried good old Google but, not much help.
Thanks and all have a great day.

Hi Caz,

As with any product...always check with the maker to be sure. Lists are not always up to date. However, these should at least get you started in the right direction.

http://www.glutenfreedrugs.com/ (there have been some errors reported from this list)

According to glutenfreedrugs.com - both of yours are GF. HOWEVER - this list was last updated in July 2008.

Do you take generic versions of these drugs? Either you or better yet, ask your pharmacist to call the makers of your drugs to double check. Dealing with pharmaceutical companies are about as much fun as going to the dentist.

Here's the contact page for Novartis - the makers of Diovan.

It appears that Mova Pharma. makes Levothyrox, but I'm not finding on their website.

Want to thank you for your time but did notice that my prescriptions are generic.
I best take them over to the pharmacy and have them check for me.
Thanks again for your time and have a great weekend.

I always go to drugs.com and go to the "professionals" area and check all the ingredients and not forgetting the inactive ingredients (the most likely place to see gluten offenders)...in my honest opinion this is the easiest way to check.....

Just be careful...

Check Medications

Allergen labeling laws do not apply to medications, vitamins or supplements.

Be sure to check the ingredients (especially the "inactive ingredients") of prescription and over-the-counter medications, food supplements, and vitamins. To find the ingredient statement of a prescription medication, ask your pharmacist for a copy of the medication's package insert. Don't assume that medications are safe for your child – or that the doctor who wrote the prescription was aware of all of the medication's ingredients. Also, you will need to familiarize yourself with the complete list of derivative names for each allergen you are avoiding as the FALCPA labeling law does not apply to medications.

They don't have to disclose what starch they actually have to use.

As a rule, I find this isn't true. I do live on Long Island though, and dealing with store cashiers, managers, or pharmicists is not the same as my experiences in Michigan. Pharmicists will ask if the product is gf, and stop at that, if they honestly ask at all. I find it is best to call the lab itself, even though it is somewhat like getting teeth pulled! Wink Then, sometimes, you have to use your own judgment. I called one company about an OTC med, and the woman that answered the phone said to me, "I am reading the ingredients now, and it doesn't say gluten anywhere!" I knew she had no idea what I was asking!

Generics must be made the same as the original drug, yet they can use whichever fillers they want. If a company tells you they do not know what is in the fillers, then that drug may not be safe.

I trusted Glutenfreedrugs.com when it told us Xanax is gf. The site is still saying Xanax is gf

Xanax-(all forms)
and it is not true, not at all. I was taking Xanax for years, thinking it was gf, having this strange neurologic reaction to it...yet knowing it was gf, I just thought it was my body reacting. MOST Xanax is not gf, there are only a few labs that make it gf...it took quite sometime, many phone calls, to find a gf product.

My advice is to always call the lab that makes the med.
