July already! Whoa - I'm a bit behind on starting this.
Things are pretty much status quo around here.
Since Cookie Daze is only a month away, Peg and I need to be figuring out what GF cookie we're going to be entering in the contest and how we want to booth to look. Peg thinks she'll enter the Fudge Puddles. I've got to check my supply of GF Handout info to make sure I've got enough.
How 'bout the rest of y'all?
For those of you just tuning in, Check-In is chance to introduce yourself, let everyone know how you're doing, what you're up to, to touch base...something, anything, just let us know you're still around

Hi there -- I am still trying to get the hang of this gluten free diet thing. I was doing excellent for about 2 weeks, my diarrhea had basically gone away, no more esophigitis tummy pains. I was feeling really great.
Then whammo, back to old symptoms again. I have to admit I did eat a twinkie at a party, knowing full well that I would pay for it the next day. Before this, if I would eat something with gluten by accident, my D would come back jsut for a day and then I would feel fine again. But I have had D for a week now, even though I been on strict GF. The other thing I tried was the GF beer, that Redbridge, which I have to say tastes just like regular beer, it is really good.
So my question, do you think my D for a week could have something to do with the yeast in the beer? I also ended up with a upper respiratory infection, but I wouldn't think that would make me get D.
Long story short, I am still not 100% convinced I am gluten senstive. I am going to stay GF for at least another month and see what happens.
**For those that didn't read my intro, I had all 4 blood tests and biopsy (doc only took 2 samples) came back negative, but given my symptoms I thought I would try going GF. |

Yes, some people are sensitive to yeast as well. I think I am one of those people. Definitely allergic to mold.
if your symptoms get better, isn't that convincing enough? It's much more than your body being allergic to a protein. Grains take lots of acids to break down, and strain the digestive system in a way some people do not deal well with. When I eat anything made with flour, even GF baked goods (although not nearly so bad as the wheaty stuff) I don't feel so great. I need my carbs unprocessed, so I eat lots of rice. _________________ Lauren

Just FYI Paj...most people see an increase in problems if they ingest gluten after being off it for awhile. So before your problems might've gone away in a day. Now it takes a week. It's a sign that your body is trying to heal.
Man, July's going to be a busy month! I have a vacation, a wedding, a birth, and (possibly) a funeral. It's the circle of life at my place. Otherwise not much is new. I finally got Terapin's stomach settled down. She's actually playing, and her coat is so much softer (omega 3s). Everybody else is pretty healthy. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

For me, it's 25 days to go until my son's wedding. Three days after that, his brother has to be out of his apt and still doesn't have a place to live (They're both in college). Nor does he have any furniture for the yet to be determined place of residence. Ah, the joys of parenting!!! _________________ Robin

PA,
Thanks for the update. One thing people find is that small infractions will set off large reactions once gluten has been removed. A twinkie would not be a small infraction.
It may take a little bit for you to recover from an infraction. You may also be getting hidden gluten from somewhere. Finding all the stuff can take time. It may even be a cross contamination issue - those are even harder to track down.
Keep at it - please give it a fair trial. Heck, you may even have to go back on gluten for awhile for you to realize that gluten maybe an issue for you.
Please, keep us updated. _________________ Al

Things here are basically the same. We are in the same state of limbo as we have been the past year and a half. My husband still can't walk and last night told the doctor to just cut the dang foot off so he can go back to work. We are on the verge of losing everything and it is not a great place to be, especially with 5 children counting on us!
I'm working as many hours as I can get. I'm thankful for the job.
Staying GF has been easy for me. When I'm on call and I have to go to a client, my boss gives me time to go home if it is meal time and eat something safe before I go on a call. Every little bit helps!
Have a wonderful month - and a safe and happy Independence day! |

Wow, July already!!!
I have been resting since the 25th of June. My oldest got married and we did everything ourselves for the wedding. I even hosted guests from Germany for the week proceeding the wedding. (cooked for 11 each night except the last 2 days before the wedding.)
The wedding work spawned a huge fibro flare that I can't seem to shake. I go to the dr. tomorrow to see if he has any 'magical' cures.
MrP is holding his own right now. His allergic reactions have progressed some. Now he can not even touch paper. It causes an immediate reaction for the big D and then muscle spasms.
With people in for the wedding, he was in constant danger of touching something that was touched by 'corn' dirty hands. (many of the family discount the problem as we were blowing things out of perportion . Some including the Germans took it very seriously. )
My major painting jobs were completed before the wedding. Now I just have to get the energy to store the wedding decorations and serving items.
I am looking forward to helping my MIL through cateract surgery on Monday and then hopefully I can get some repair surgery for my urinary problems.
So, after all that, I look forward to moving onward with painting my kitchen! (I am a gluten for punishment. LOL) _________________

Sorghum is closely related to corn if I remember correctly. You can not cheat because your body doesn't have the resources to fight off the offending grains.
It is very possible that you have other grains that will cause you problems while you are healing.
stick with the simple grains and after 6 months, you might be able to re-introduce more complex grains back into your diet.
If you use the rice/tapioca/potato starch blended flour, it makes wonderful treats and breads. 6 cups of rice/1 cup of tapioca/ 2 cups of potato starch. You will use about 1 tsp of xanthan gum or guar gum to work with each cup of the mix.
If you have any questions just come here and hopefully we will be able to 'talk' you through the problem. _________________

Happy 4th, everybody. I'm in Salem, MA, for my grandfather's memorial and some family time. I'm just about to go shopping (yay! Trader Joes' - we don't have in Denver), and just have to report that my Mom is 100% supportive and understanding of my needs. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the family thinks when it comes time for group social functions and eating out, never mind explaining why I have an entire bag of food just for me.
I'm playing it super safe these days after a low level, 2 week glutening by a product that had been safe for me for the past year (my fault - complacency). I've started with liquid B12 in addition to my usual regimine of supplements. It seems to be helping. I had tons of PN-type symptoms through this last glutening. It sounds crazy, but sometimes I'd rather have digestive issues than these neuro ones.
Have a great month you all. Thanks for your continuing support and sharing of information. It's valuable beyond words... _________________ Nance

Busy days for me for a while. I am working for the jumbotron for the chuckwagons and grandstand show at the Calgary Stampede until the 15th. (Please don't mention cruelty to animals - I'm more concerned about cruelty to staff at this time...5 hours in a cramped, hot room and no time for a bathroom break.)
The last two weeks of July the boys have swimming lessons in the morning and the afternoons are up for grabs.
July 31st we fly to Vancouver Island for a week with my parents. My sister and her family will be there as well, so it will be a lot of fun for the four boys to be together and for my mom to have all her grand-boys there. I'm sure she'll be quietly wishing for girl, but that ain't gonna happen! _________________ Mom of Ty (he's nine) who was diagnosed by bloodwork June 2005, biopsy August 11, 2005, notified on & started GF August 18, 2005 |

great hearing from everyone! Those with health and family concerns, my prayers are with you!
Al and Peg, you two are close enough, we might have to plan our summer trip to Wis. around the Cookie Daze just for the Fudge Puddles!
Things have been pretty busy here, the child care is in full bloom (5 kids) Which I am enjoying because after next month, I will close the child care to homeschool Matthew.
Speaking of which, he still has O.T. twice a week, which has made an enormous improvement in all of our lives, most importantly, his!!
His health has been pretty good over all. He's had a mild run in with CC of gluten after having lunch with dad last Sunday. Thankfully, it didn't last too long.
DD is going to a sleep away camp this month which she's really looking forward to. One of the workers has CD and they assure me they can provide her GF meals.
My health has been a bit of a roller coaster as of late. However, I'm counting my blessings! Everything they have found thus far has all come back benign!
Have a wonderful July everyone... stay cool! _________________ Kristie M.

Happy July, everyone!
Well, this has been a month of change for me...
I have re-entered the dating pool , and I have a second date tonight, so I'm taking that as a good sign, right? Oh, yeah, and get this: his mom has celiac sprue, so he knew all about (and understands) my diet!
My best friend's dad passed away on Sunday, and today was the funeral, but it was a good sense of closure for me. His dad had really been suffering and it is a bit reassuring now to know that he is at peace.
A new market opened about 5 minutes from my house--it's called the Gluten Free Market, and I am *so* excited!!! I know I posted about it already, but it's just so awesome that there is a specialty store so close!
I am also thinking about looking for another job--I love the writing aspect, but not the sales-y part of it...so, I have been working on re-vamping my resume...anyone know of any openings for writers? _________________ ~Torrey

Hi Kristie,
Cookie Daze is set for August 4th. It would be pretty cool to see y'all, but I have to tell you, it's probably not the most gluten free friendly place in the the world that day. Probably, the direct opposite!
There's TONS of stuff to do for kids, but it'd be a CC nightmare...and lots of temptation for little ones [heck, even big ones ]. I wouldn't want Matthew to get sick. If you want to see what goes on, here's the 2006 schedule of events. _________________ Al

Not much going on here but I did take a trip north over the 4th and visited Mount St. Helens with it's gas floating up from the crater. It was a great trip and we saw the Air Flight Museum in Seattle. I recommend both places highly. I visited alot of other places as well but won't bore with the details. I could live to travel and wish I could find a living traveling (except the diet thing is really hard to follow while traveling!
