Hi all,

I have had blood tests that came back positive CD, as well as being anemic and weight loss. While I wait for a biopsy I was told to take iron. Well I have been taking "easy Iron" and feel even worse than normal. I have constipation and nausea in the evening and then the runs and nausea most of the day.

Could this be the iron?

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry to hear you're still having some issues. Iron supps can account for some of the constipation. However, if you indeed have villi damage, I'm not sure how much iron is being absorbed.

The Big D - I'm guessing you're still eating gluten? It could be other food issues, any number of things.

I have been feeling so lousy that I have cut way back on any gluten but am still eating foods with it. I'm not sure how far off my biopsy test is so i didn't want to go GF and skew the test.

Correct, you need to be careful. I think 1-2 slices a bread per day would do it.

will the doc give you a CD diagnosis based solely on your blood work? Some docs will. That would hasten your removal of gluten.

I doubt it. Even with being anemic , losing weight and the positive blood test he still thinks I probably do not have CD because my blood test results, although in the positive range are not high enough in his mind.

I'm also having trouble getting into see a gastro doc as many of them are not taking any new referrals so I have to wait.

I think I'm going to skip the iron for a few days and see what happens.

Thanks

I should add, my blood results listed me as positive, not negative, nor weak positve,

for the constipation and diarrhea, I suggest psyllium husk...1 tblspn after each meal.

You need to also check and make sure the iron pill you are taking does not contain gluten in the coating of the pill. Several of my meds did and I had to switch. Good luck...

I take iron, and you probably should after you do go gluten free for a time, get a copy of your blood work and see what your levels are.

My iron is called Ferrasorb, I think you have to buy it online. I did not have a single symptom when I first started taking it, and it is working very well for me. I have been taking it for 5 months.

um, well, if my intestinal health is a bit off already, psyllium gives me oodles of gas and accompanying discomfort. It doesn't do that to my whole family though so each to their own of course. B.R.A.T. - bananas, rice, apples, toast - still works pretty well for me to go easy on my stomach.
My son has not reacted to his iron supplement in such a way but he had been GF for a while. His is a liquid from a pharmacy not a pill. it's cherry flavored and we add it to juice. I think I would take it the same way if I had to.

I had to have iron injections. They leave an odd mark at the injection site. I just could not tolerate the oral iron. Or oral much of anything for a while in there.
