Somewhat new here. I get a lot of useful information at this forum, but I must have missed the topic about Lays BBQ chips containing barley malt flour. After my daughter ate half the bag I glanced at the allergy information, there isn't any, so I read the ingredient list, and there it is. We don't deviate too often on food, she likes what she likes and it really bummed me out that they put barley in the ingredients and not a mention of any allergy or may contain wheat. How odd all the other bags of lays have allergy info. Why is it that the BBQ chips say nothing? I do subscribe to the Clan Thompson newsletter and I don't remember anything in there either.

Another question if anyone can help. Rice Krispy treats. I know they are not GF, why does it not state it on the package?

Again, bummed about the Pace products as well.

Here's FL's GF list: http://www.fritolay.com/your-health/products-not-containing-gluten.html

Notice = updated 3/31/09

Barley does not have to be disclosed as an allergy..only wheat must be disclosed.

gotta run...

By law, manufacturers have to declare the top 8 allergens. Wheat is one of them, but barley is not. It is possible for gluten grains that are not wheat to be hidden in the fine print of ingredient labels or in things like natural flavors. Unfortunately, manufacturers are not required to clearly label anything besides wheat.

Same deal with Rice Krispie treats. They have barley malt in them. Kellogs is under no legal obligation to indicate that this is a source of gluten.

Now, if only Kelloggs would follow General Mills' example re: barley malt (i.e. working on removing it from Rice Chex et. al)...I haven't found a *really* good substitute for plain crisped rice treats. (Koala Crunch works pretty well for the chocolaty kind, but... Smile ) Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for your reply. I just needed a kick in the pants and get back into the habit of reading labels on everything.
