A number weeks back we made some TW soup and we had some leftover rutabaga. Peg decided to cook it in the microwave and mash it up. Both of us really liked it.

Since Peg was teaching Sunday School [and didn't wait around for her to get done], I was in charge of Sunday lunch. I grilled a turkey breast and some regular potatoes, a sweet potato and a rutabaga.

I wanted to see how the rutabaga would taste on the grill. As y'all probably know roasting intensifies the flavor of a veggie. We mashed up this batch with some butter, salt and pepper. Yeah - a definite boost in flavor - almost too much. We decided to mix in a bit of Peg's sweet potato - this was much better.

We'll have to play around this this a bit. Anybody have in rutabaga stories of their own?

No stories, but that sure looks good! Rutabaga is one of my favorite vegetables. You've probably all figured out by now that I'm a veggie fiend. Just can't get enough! I have been planning to try oven roasting some. Just pulled a few from the garden.

Actually I do have a rutabaga story. One winter my DH injured his back and was out of work as a result. We lived for six weeks on the food we had in our freezer. Vegetable soup with the veggies from our garden was the standard fare several times a week. One night I decided to mix things up a bit. I put in a package of diced, frozen rutabaga that my uncle had given us from his garden. Apparently he let the rutabagas grow until they were the size of basketballs, because as I was to find out, it was like trying to gnaw on a piece of wood. They were totally non-edible. That night we threw the soup away, and made something else. Probably pancakes, because in those days we could get boxes of bacon ends for 28 cents a lb., so we ate a lot of pancakes and bacon then too. Oh for the good old days.... NOT!!!
