I have Celiac and was wondering if anyone here has a problem with a very strange smell in their stool? Most of the times it's okay but sometimes it almost smells toxic or metal I know it is hard to discribe and an embarresing question . I was wondering if this is something I should be concerned about? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi STZ,
Foul smelling stool is a common symptom of CD. However, after being GF for awhile, that should go away [it will smell like roses]. _________________ Al

I have been GF since mid April of this year. How long should it take? _________________ STZ

I changed my diet early April of last year, and I remember it took a couple of months for it to go away. Soy causes the same thing now, so I avoid it if I'm going to be around anyone now. I'm pretty sure it was gone by August because I took a trip August of last year, and I don't remember worrying about it then. I'm sure it's different for everyone.
I would also try a food journal to see if any specific foods are making it worse. It took me a long time to realize I had an issue with soy, and I'm pretty sure it's because I totally overdid soy. I know just about any food can cause the same issue if you have too much of it without rotating it.
(on a side note, I recently found a product called poo-pourri. Sounds weird, but it works great. You spray it in the toilet before you go, and it completely masks the smell. It's wonderful for situations where the foul smell could be very embarrassing) |

I agree with Caroline. I have a similar reaction to soy....whenever I eat it, I get foul smelling gas and stool (in addition to bloating, stomach noises, belly ache - very similar to gluten symptoms). Maybe you could be reacting to another food intolerance? Since going gluten free, have you increased your soy intake? Or egg (any other food) intake?
Caroline- I definitely overdid it with soy too and I think that's why I react to it. Not sure if you would know this, but maybe you've talked to a doctor.....do you think that this intolerance is temporary and that our bodies can begin to digest soy in the future or do you think this is permanent? |

Don't mean to get personal here, (and I don't have a rose garden) but
if it floats then you may have fat malabsorption. That can take a while
to go away, per my husband's experience. (2 years and counting) Incomplete digestion I think is the culprit for the odor. Age is a big
factor in the time it takes to heal though. We are in our 50's. If you are
much younger it could be much faster for you.
Caseygirl I think a lot of the other food reactions may be due to leaky gut.
If that is true, then it's possible it will go away if your leaky gut heals.
On the other hand, soy can interfere with the absorption of minerals
so it's probably not the best thing for us anyway. I react to it too. _________________ Gluten, Casein, Egg, Yeast and Soy Free
